Two Colorado Girls Forced to Pay Neighbor $900 After Anonymously Leaving Cookies on Her Doorstep (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=473840&page=1)
Feb. 5, 2004 — A pair of Colorado teens surprised a neighbor by baking cookies — no charge.

It cost them $900.

Taylor Ostergaard, 18, and Lindsey Zellitti, 19, decided to stay home from a dance in July in order to surprise their neighbors with an anonymous delivery of homemade cookies.

But one of their neighbors, Wanita Renea Young, 49, became so terrified she suffered an anxiety attack and called the police. Young sued the girls and this week was awarded $900 to recoup her medical bills.

The two teens recounted the incident on "Good Morning America," and said that though they were disappointed by the judge's decision, they weren't angry and would continue to do good deeds.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

After finishing farm chores for the evening, Ostergaard asked her father if she and Zellitti could bake cookies and deliver them to a few neighbors in rural Durango.

"We think outside the box a little more than usual," said Zellitti. "We just wanted to do something nice for other people, [to] let them know other people care about them even though they didn't know who it was."

The girls knocked on the doors only of homes with lights on, left the cookies on the porch and ran away, wanting to keep their good deed anonymous. The packages included heart-shaped cards that read: "Have a great night. From the T and L Club."

At around 10:30 p.m., they knocked on Young's door. Young, whose home had reportedly been burglarized before, became frightened and called the police. The police determined no crime had been committed. But the next day, Young was admitted to the hospital suffering from an anxiety attack.

This country needs tort reform, seriously.

So this judge actually thinks leaving cookies at someone's doorstep is a crime?

Is sending someone a letter without a return address a crime, too?

It's sad. Yes, the girls exercised some poor judgment by pounding on the woman's door at 10:30 at night. But this woman didn't even go to the hospital until the next day! I think she's litgious, and if I had been the judge I would've fined her for wasting the courts time!
In addition, I read recently that the father of one of the girls she sued has filed a restraining order against this woman's husband. Apparently, he's been calling and harassing them.

Wanita Young said, "This has turned into quite a fiasco. It's something that never should have happened, and it's just devastating. My phone hasn't stopped ringing. My life has been threatened, and I'll probably have to move out of town."

this lady is just totally FULL OF CRAP. but she's right about one thing, it never should have happened. and it's all wanita young's fault too. if she didn't sue, she wouldn't be in this "life threatening" situation.

she also, apparently, wanted to charge them for the security camera and auto sensor lights she had to install out of fear..

my favorite was when they told 'their side'

The Youngs said that they have been inundated by insulting and threatening messages.

"I don't believe the girls meant for this to happen," Herbert Young said. "But they could have prevented it from happening if they had just shut their mouths when they came out of court."

although according to the article, the original article was based on court records and what wanita had told them right after the hearing.. the girls 'refused to comment' until people wrote in saying that the only lesson this taught people is that you shouldnt do good things.. and then girls said that just because the court system burned them once doesnt mean they will stop doing bad deeds.. and i havent seen one article of them accusing the youngs or even insulting them..

in fact, everything else they have said is 'we dont blame her, shes a good person'

then there were the other times the youngs have sued people

"Another complaint was spurred by a July 4, 1997, accident in which the Youngs' pickup collided with a slow-moving hay-bale loader turning into a field as they attempted to pass it on a county road.

The case was settled out of court by an insurance company. Renea Young reported suffering neck, head and back injuries."
