hello,
which would be better, using the peercast, which allows me to use my already-useful dsl connection to broadcast out to an unlimited number of people, or pay for hosting??

peercast is reliant on the bandwith around you and can not be guarenteed
hosting bandwith is guarenteed and can achieve the number of listeners without any worries
you get what you pay for in this world :)

1. There is no such thing as unlimited.
2. P2P streaming would also need for all your users to download a special software...When I listen to any radio stream - I like to use either Windows Media or Winamp.
Forcing users to download p2p stream software will greatly reduce your listener base.
