View Full Version : What LAME Mp3 Encoder options do you use?

I was using AudioCatalyst 2.1 before I switched over to using EAC + LAME. But now what are the best options to use while encoding? I mean the default options alone under EAC at 192 kBit/s sounds great, but i want to make sure I'm encoding things at there best.

Any help is appreciated.

I use 256kbps, Stereo, Optimized for Quality, NO CRC. I use the LAME.DLL with Exact Audio Copy to rip CDs, although I don't do it that often.

I use the command line
lame -b 192 -h -m s whatever.wav whatever.mp3

-V3 -b 128 -m s -h

sometimes I change the -V3 to -V2 for songs that I really like veeeeery much.

When LAME 3.88 is out, I will probably switch to joint-stereo, but with 3.87 regular stereo is simply better.

j stereo uses only records the data that is different between the two channels, whereas stereo makes no distinction, and records all the data

I've asked that same question several times, and I understand your answer. BUT, at what bitrate does this option make a difference? Say I prefer 128kbps, fixed, no variable bit, is Joint Stereo, or Stereo best? This is in regard to the LAME encoder. I know I could experiment and all that, but as I understand it, the difference in quality is almost impossible to hear, but the encoded MP3 is slightly smaller with Joint. Maybe a further explanation is needed.

I use LAME encoded at 224. I've found that 192 is very good, but I still notice a slight difference between that and 224. I notice no difference between 224 and higher. I have a high-end dolby digital receiver hooked up (digitally), and I use RazorLame with LAME 3.87. RazorLame tells me my options are " -b 224 -m j -h"

So, if I understand your command line instructions, you are using Joint Stereo. Why? That is the question..

Pesho, any ideas when LAME 3.88 will be out? It's been a while since any updates!

I've been using ABR at 192 bits for the last two month with LAME 3.87. The resulting bits rates are usually in the 185-198 range. I also use Joint Stereo. It sounds good to me.
