Different playback types can have different settings, i.e., when playing mp3 from hard disk I like to shuffle songs and repeat the whole set, when playing from CD I like to hear the CD unshuffled from beginning to end just once (It's usually a brand new CD you see). Say you are playing mp3s, it would be nice if you then put in a CD and the settings change to "CD mode" and then when you are finished and want to play mp3s again Winamp remebered how you like to listen to mp3s and changed your settings back. You could even allow the user to build custom settings for each playlist he/she has (contained in the playlist file?). I'm unsure how this would effect shoutcast etc... but you could always allow the user to turn this function off on certain playback types.
