Hey all. This follows on from an old post:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=213483

But this is a different question so i thought a new topic was needed. Even before i posted the old thread, back when i was getting the "[yp_add] error connecting to yp.shoutcast.com" error message, I didn't think there was a real problem with the streaming because i was able to connect to the stream via this link:

http://10.40.4.253:8000/listen.pls

As i was at uni, i only checked the accessability from other computers within my university. I thought the error might have been some yellow pages problem and i didn't really care about that. But then after i told people to listen in from home, they said they couldn't, and someone suggested firewall problems as the reason, so then i posted the previous topic, to which i found it is most likely true. But someone else went past me and sent an email to my uni IT department asking about the firewall, and got this response:

>the server has a private (internal) address it won't be accessible from outside >regardless of firewalls etc.
>
>you would need a public address which would need to be authorised by ITCS >Infrastructure group and I doubt if that would be forthcoming primarily for security >reasons, such a server being not under the control of ITCS systems admins could >be a hole to allow hackers to gain access to the ACU network.

So my question is, is that just a BS line to get rid of us pesky students? Anyone with some solid facts and truths in laymens terms for me would be fantastic, i don't know enough about computers to know if i'm being fed BS or not, or how to come up with a solution.
Thanks again,
Trev.

That is what all IT departments trying to protect their networks will tell you. It's not BS it's internet security, that's their job. You aren't allowed special privileges to loosen their infrastructures. I mean... you ask them to allow ports 8000-8001 and next time someone will ask them to open a few more and then it will have more holes than a sieve.
Sad, tough but true. :D

Your only hope if your IT people won't let you run your own server is to use external hosting (while still streaming from your school):

Unfortunately bandwidth costs money and they could be another reason they don't allow just anyone to run servers.
