A lot of what has been said on here is true and it's easy to agree with it, but something Music Match (which i totally hate) has over Winamp is the total player thing. It records, it burns, it keeps track of all your mp3s, in fact i think it even will let you print out a list of all your MP3's. I know that if i was new to the magical world of Digital Audio files that I would want something easy to use with many options, like Music Match or Earjam, not Winamp. DO NOT GET ME WRONG WINAMP IS WORSHIPFUL but it's not quite there yet. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif

WAAAAASSSSUUUUPPP! For reals, Win Amp is jiggy, but i wants to record stuff, too!

just because one program "has it all" doesn't mean it is the best at it. usually (as i see it) when one company tries to dominate every project, like playing music, burning music, etc.. their products tend to become sloppy and well-not to good. do one thing and do it well. thats what i say.

also, with putting more stuff in winamp would take away part of its appeal--it's speed. if you look at sonique or music match they will never compare to winamp in cpu usage.

winamp simpally is the best.

Um...you can print a list of your mp3s. Go to your playlist, chose the Misc option, it's under Generate HTML Playlist, it makes a great printable mp3 list. press CRTL+ALT+G

Hope that helps you with your delima, if only partially

Not to be an ass or anything, but I like WinAmp for what it isn't. If I do want to encode, rip, burn, or do any other painful sounding computer lingo, I'll use an app that is built for that duty. winamp is great because it does the things I need it to and does them damn well.

Confucious say: Less is more.

Or at least the fortune cookie told me so.
Winamp is not, nor should it ever be, a
program suite. Instead they should concentrate on making the best player that
can possibly be.

personally, i think that winamp should do and continue to do what its always done best: play music. when you start adding things like encoding codecs and all the extra programming needed for it, you have a bloated piece of laggy-ass software that can slice and dice onions. Winamp should stick to being the premier music player for windows, and not the swiss army knife of mp3 players, like music match.

I would tend to agree with this assesment. If the good people at Nullsoft wished to build a ripper from scratch.......
Music Match sure won't be a challenge to beat.

There are programs that do riping/encoding real good. When you have program suites they get bloated and icky (Microsoft.. any of their products).. If you want to rip, use Audio Grabber.. if you want to encode, there are plenty of internal encoders that you can use from audio grabber...

Adding all of that stuff to winamp would eat up CPU usage and make it a bigger download. I think it's better to have a ripper for ripping, and endcoder for encoding, and Winamp for playing. That way, you only run/download what you need.

WinBurn? How about nullsoft makes a burning, ripping, encoding program that's equally as kickass as winamp but as a different program. Best of both worlds I say.

Winamp is great... I use it very much everyday. I tried to use windows media player to play an mp3 and record music via soundcard to .wav file. It sounded jittery like a machine gun. Tried setting its buffer to 30 seconds and no effect.
Get out trusty ole Winamp, set buffer to 10000ms and bang, perfect sound, no skipping, and no machine guns trying to kill my recordings.
One thing I learned is that if it does what you like, use it. And in my terms Winamp does a wonderful job.

Winamp should stay as player an not a suite of programs - that would just make it into "bloatware". And "bloatware is generally sub-standard cos of all the extra crap that has been added just to make it sound great so people download it.

One other thing while I'm on a roll - get rid of the minibrowser! Remember what Netscape and MSIE are for... I know some of you may use it or want to be able to use it to view lyrics etc, but I have never once used it! Or at least give us an option not to have to download it!
