View Full Version : combining bandwidth?

OK, I have about 256kbs of upload bandwidth at my office location and 512MB of upload bandwidth at my home. Can these somehow be combined when broadcasting a single stream. For example, my office bandwidth is used first & when that reaches its limit with users, it then kicks over and uses my home's upload bandwidth. Is this a pipe dream or possible? Just curious.

While unlikely -- if you can run a DNAS at the office to relay the DNAS at your home, what you want will happen -- it's called a cluster.
Most office LANs are behind a NAT box and/or firewall that is there to prevent doing what you want to do -- but I would give it a try -- if you get "Cannot see your Station..." errors, give up right away because it could get you in trouble -- on the other hand, if you want to provide the DNAS for others on the office LAN, make the office DNAS private [non-public] and share the music with your co-workers -- this would preserve your home bandwidth for internet listeners.

Well, my "office location" is actually my own business so no worries about the HR department. I am the HR dept. (LOL!!!). Anyway, I have a NETGEAR router hooked up there and have broadcasted som music using its bandwidth so maybe I can do what you suggest.

Yep, that's the ticket :)
Just make sure that you scale the MaxListeners at the office so you don't exceed your oubound limit or your peeps may not be able to get their work done, lol.
A warning: The cluster logic is not sequential or prioritized, and you cannot control which DNAS will get hit first once they become a cluster.

Technically that is wrong. If you send someone directly to the primary server, it will only re-direct them to the relay once it is full up.

Yes :) I should have been more clear about that...
I never did too much testing with clusters, but the logic I was referring to was what happens when a user clicks the listen link in the SHOUTcast directory for a clustered station -- I've seen the .pls returned contain multiple DNAS addresses sometimes, and other times only one? -- once the primary is full and a request is redirected, will the YP only return the second DNAS? and for how long?
