Desktop view

I was just wondering if there was a way to use the desktop view thing without having winamp on.

Not sure about getting milkdrop running by itself in desktop but there a little program called dremples by Ryan Giess the guy who created milkdrop.
It does a pretty fine job of it, you can even use your own pictures and it kind of melts them around and stuff. Also works as a screensaver.
