Personal Jesus

For those who have heard this song and know the band who made this song: 'Depeche Mode', I have a question:

The lyrics first go like "your own personal jesus... someone to hear your prayers... someone who cares... reach out touch faith"

Then I hear "by the telephone... lift up the reciever... I'll make you a believer"

What I would like to know is whether this song is serious (i.e. the band really believe in Christ), or on the other hand a complete parody of Christ?

Course it's not serious, it's just another pop song.

I recall when this was originally released, they placed an advert in the music papers in the uk that read..'To hear your own personal Jesus, call 0898 9878787' or something like that, you dialed the (premium rate) number and it played a blast of the song at you.

Man, the religious groups in the UK had a fucking fit with DM, 'it's blasphemy to use the lords name to promote this evil rock music' etc etc, the phone number was swiftly removed shortly afterwards....

However, at that point in time, the song is probably about seeking solace in drugs or something, and how Dave Gahan was using them as his own saviour, given the ammount of Charlie he was smoking/shooting in himself.

By the way, try listening to the Johnny Cash version of this if you wanna hear it sung in a totaly unique way...
