I have tried 2 different Automation software packages (Jockey LT and DRS2006) and Im wondering which automation software is more common?
I'd like to know if most stations are running Simplecast plug-in together with the Automation software or on seperate computers. I have found that using a plug-in for broadcasting can be dangerous, especially if you want to take your automation system down but want to keep the station on air -say playing back from CD while fixing something on the automation PC.
Secondly has anyone successfully been able to send playlist info (stream title and song info) to a shoutcast server from automation software without going through simplecast?
thanks,

from what i have seen people saying in the past Sam from spacial audio is the best and most commonly used automation software in the land,
check the link for scheduled content delivery in my sig for a new way of automating your mixes/adverts at set times on your streams without the need for expensive software :)

Never used JLT (never even heard of it before) and I tried DRS before but just didn't like it at the time (although that was two years ago. Went with SAM2 at the time (now SAM3) and I don't know what I would do without it. Some time ago it used to be a bit buggy and unstable - now I never have an issue with it and run it 24/7 with live shows, prerecorded shows and normal rotation with requests and it handles it all like a true gem. The audio processing in it also compliments the package quite nicely.
As far as taking the automation system down I simply fire up Winamp/Shoutcast on another PC, terminate the encoder in SAM and fire up Shoutcast on the other PC. Long as it's done in 15 seconds or so you don't lose listeners and when done switch right back over.
Title and song infor can be controlled at any time through PAL scripts.

I use OtsDJ with the shoutcast DSP as a plugin.
If you don't know what it is ask google.

Favorite automation software? SS32 (http://www.scottstudios.com/) is by far the best i've ever used. Although with a $5k+ price tag I doubt many running a hobby shoutcast station can afford it.
However if you still want a sample of what the "big boys" use there is a cheaper solution, NexGen101 (by the creators of NexGen; the Clear Channel solution). http://www.nexgen101.com/

I use SAM3 and AIR (Automation for Intelligent Radio)
I prefer AIR because it has voicetracking support and can play liners over the intros of songs :)

Im now using DRS2006 Standard version but a lot of features are missing and it seems that they want you to use the PRO version. Im concerned if I should go with different software.
All your comments are very valuable because it gives me an idea of what software to invest in.
Thanks again to all of you for speaking up.
