When I downloaded Windows updates from the MS server, the download file was grabbed by Winamp. This immediately caused all exe files to become non-operational. A complete shutdown and restart caused only Explorer to be running. All other system tray items were kaput.
This was verified by having it happen twice to me and once to the technician who was rebuilding my system.
Winamp inveigles itself into all facets of the OS and will invariably cause problems and conflicts. Two days to recover.
To all who run 2.6.2 - make sure that no trace of Winamp is in your system tray or running at startup.
