Ever since WinAmp 2.6x, my system has gone through various freezes while using WinAmp. It would play a song or two, then midway through a song, it would just lock up. I wouldn't even get a warning with CrashGuard.
Now as buggy as CrashGuard is, the first thing I thought was it may be CrashGuard. Turning that (and the SETI client) off made no difference. Same problem.
I uninstalled WinAmp, reinstalled 2.64, same problem, only now I was extremely lucky to make it through one song.
Other MP3 players worked fine: CoolPlayer (lousy sound), Windows Media Player, MusicMach Jukebox all worked fine, in spite of their nearly unusable interfaces.
The fix?
I uninstalled WinAmp, ran Norton System Doctor and cleaned out every reference to WinAmp in my registry. I then did a search in my registry for any reference to WinAmp, and cleaned that out.
I reinstalled 2.64, and now it runs like a charm. No system freezes, no hiccups, nada. This is the way the damned thing is supposed to work.
So, I'm thinking it's just pile-up over pile-up of WinAmp upgrades over each other over the past year and a half or so.
Either that, or Elvis lives lives on my hard drive.
Hunk-a hunk-a burnin' love.
