So, Thanksgiving dinner is basically Xmas dinner, but with no Xmas pud?

the turkey and stuffing are coming together nicely. my sister invited some away from home soilders to have dinner with us. and so far its not as awkward as you think it might be. they are over at her house and will come here when dinner is served.

Does someone want to explain Thanksgiving to me? As far as I can work out, you're all celebrating the theft of land from the natives and giving them smallpox.
Poor turkeys. (http://www.factoryfarming.com/poultry.htm)

Wrong.
It's about giving thanks for how good you have it.
And thinking and helping out other people less better off than you.
So if your on a computer on thanksgiving. You should be giving thanks.
There are only about 4 billion other people on this earth that there life pretty much sucks compared to yours.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. :D
And thank you God for everything you've given me.

Poor turkeys. (http://www.factoryfarming.com/poultry.htm) the u.s. always tries to act all noble most of the time, fighting evils and what not, but what happend to the natives was pretty hardcore never mind about the whole hiroshima thing. (to be fair the guys that pushed the button didnt really know it was going to blow up that big) at least we dont try to pretend that it never happend like the germans. we just bend history a little when we teach it to our children.
no but really my family uses it as an excuse to go over the year and review what we have to be thankfull for. yes we litterally stand around in a circle and everything. it can be embarassing but im down for it, if it helps those that it helps. i dont gorge myself like alot of the people that come to our get together do but then again i usually get really sick if i get too full. my mom cooks well, everyone enjoys and looks foward to it.
my family looks for any reason to get together. even if we have been getting away from it a bit lately. holidays/parties are good for people (even if they dont suite me much) im suprised different cultures dont share parties more often, if not just to have an excuse for a party.
im usually given a sour face from across the table when i remind everyone that they are consuming what was once a living animal. "o thank you dear cow, bird, or pig for giving your life so that i might enjoy the subtle momentary pleasure of grinding your remains into mushy bits and swallowing them." and then i get nailed with a bisquit as i chew contentivly on seasoned animal flesh.
*useless fact: some of the meat we eat isnt digested like the other food we eat. it instead rots in our bellys and can take quite alot longer to pass than normal food. leave a peice of meat out on a counter for a week (thats what happens inside you when you eat meat) this best describes red meat's digestive process.
enjoy!

Happy Thanksgiving.
My oldest son said the sweetest prayer at dinner tonight. Everyone had tears when he was done. Made me darn proud of him :)

I had to work. It was okay though, because I got double time... though that isn't even $100. I'm not too upset about it though, as our family is getting together on Saturday.

I don't about american tradition abt celebrating thanksgiving day, but a local american food shop had kept stuffed turkey for the last 3-4 days on the occassion of thanksgiving. Awesome turkey... i never knew it tasted THIS good...

@ Omit Name - You fucking wanker. Better 80,000 dead Japanese than 80,000 dead Americans. (at the time)
Also, if it didn't breathe, it's not worth eating, wheth'er for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or Saturday!

hmm.
siebe: i mean how the german government never lets anything about that time come out in movies or what not including swastikas and whatever.
ztv: all i was trying to say is that thanksgiving is based on some of its aspects can have its unrefined points. mass turkey murders, or at times people realate it (some people some of the time) to a sort of victory dinner over americans vs. indians. i was trying to seem humble about some misgivings so people who dont understand thanksgiving might see it for its good things. didnt the u.s. sort of accidently end like millions of japanese people that day?
i didnt mean to offend anyone and honestly i was probably trying for some attention but it seems like pissed off or offended some people. so i take it back.

:D
We had some stupid thanksgiving thing at school, and I really don't like being around the kid who's 22, in 11th grade, and eats with his fingers, but nevertheless I was sat next to him.
Guess what? A CHRISTIAN group was serving. So they go around the table "what're you thankful for". So, not to offend the christians, I wittingly said "Not a god damned thing". Yeah, that was after I laughed while they "said grace". "Thank you god for our wonderful classroom" (snorts), "and for the lovely food you've provided us with".
I'm pretty sure the christian group cooked the food, not god.. if he did, wow man.. Stick to your dayjob :D

I celebrated with a bowl of pasta the size of my head. It was good. Now, my family is pretty hardcore Italian, but I have yet to figure out when it became acceptable to have pasta on Thanksgiving. The two major grocery store chains in my area, Tops and Giant Eagle, have each year given away free turkeys to shoppers who spend x amount of dollars at their stores during the weeks before T-day, but this year, Tops also decided to allow customers to substitute that turkey with lasagna. (Giant Eagle didn't even offer the promotion this year, but that is another issue.) Again, I don't understand. Thanksgiving dinner is turkey, stuffing, yams, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie, along with any other minor parts you may or may not throw in (mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, etc.). It's not pasta! What is going on?

My mom made corn casserole to have with thanksgiving dinner this year. I liked that better than anything else we had.

Roast brined free range turkey, baked ham with pineapple, creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, cranberry-orange relish, dressing, turkey gravy, hot mixed pickles, crab stuffed portabella mushrooms, green beans, deviled eggs, pumpkin pie, apple pie, cranberry nut bread, chocolate chunk pumpkin nut bread, egg nog, and dinner rolls...
All of it homemade! (Most of it was made by my son:))
Didn't want to stuff myself so I limited myself to one plate :(
I finally got to sample everything by Saturday.
Simply put: it was excellent!
