View Full Version : Skipping and movement control

I've tried all the posts on skipping and stuttering but nothing seems to help. Problem was mild in 2.5, unbearable in 2.6.

However, I do have a clue. The skip (usually ahead, but occasionally back) is ALWAYS accompanied by the appearance of the Winamp movement cursor. If I am working in any other program, the movement cursor will appear, the MP3 file will skip and, the movement icon disappear. If I'm fast enough, I can drag the cursor before it disappears and part of the screen will shift.

This also happens when there is absolutely nothing else open--or even loaded--but Winamp. I am running an Athlon 600, 384MG of RAM, Win98 SE, a Niva TNT video cards, TerraTec EWS88 sound card and, depending on where the files are located, either a SCSI Ultra 2 or a UDMA 66 hard drive. Vis a vis the soundcard, the problem is identical whether I map through the card or the Windows mapper.

Also, the problem does not occur with several other players (Sonique and DJ2000) I've tried. Does anyone have any fixes for this?

You might have turned the process level in winamp to Idle. Go to Prefs>Options and then at the bottom make sure that the Process Priority is at least at Normal. I have mine on high and I only get skips when i dial up to the internet.

Thanks, but the problem, unfortunately, seems to be something else.

If I use Windows close program dialog to kill absolutely everything not essential to running the computer except Winamp and open a resource monitor, the skips are marked by a sudden spike in CPU usage from 1-2% to 55-60%.

This is driving me nuts...there is nothing happening in the computer--even the CD autoplay function has been disabled to prevent Windows from checking the drive status--except Winamp and it still skips.

after viewing this bug report and another bug report regarding the same symptoms ,
i believe i've found the true problem ,
the output plug-in , no matter the specific one , is coded for x86 , all the people complaining are running AMD processors ,
so maybe the problem can be solved with a proper plug-in coded espc. for AMD .

dont think so. instead, hit control-p, goto display and DEACTIVATE "use winamp-style (skinned) cursors". now it sould work.
skinned cursors sometimes give problems because they are usually 256 colors, and many graphic cards dont support hardware acceleration for cursors with more than 2 colors. so, software acceleration is used and winamp stutters. although, on your machine this should not be a problem. try it anyway.
