I run a small gaming community and we're looking to set up a private shoutcast server that is only accessible through our site, 50 slots max, for our friends within the community. After reading through the RIAA faqs, I'm not sure what I need to do and where I stand with a PRIVATE NOT FOR PROFIT webcast. I understand the reasoning for licensing etc but we don't fall in any of the categories listed. Can anyone shed some light on what my options are, if we need to pay fees to do this it's not happening which is a shame, all it's doing is broadcasting music to our gaming friends while we are at work.

Thanks for the replies in advance.

If your community consists of nmembers of the public, then it's not really considered private. If you set up SHOUTcast to play music on your own LAN and it is not accessible to others on the Internet, it's private.

If you play only talk and indie music with the artist's permission, you're usually okay too (Although if the indie music includes "covers" of other songs, you have to pay royalties)

If you're playing any copyrighted material, you should pay royalties to be legal. I'll PM you a suggestion or two...
