After installing V2.62 of Winamp the music will skip and stutter even on 16 bps! I cannot even listen to 5 minutes of music without this occurring. Worse yet the music will hang in a loop over and over and over. This problem needs to be fixed asap. I am using a 700 mhz AMD cpu with 256 mb of memory and have a USB Modemblaster modem connecting in at 38,000.
Suggestions?

I am experiencing similar behaviour on a 400A/64mb/Win98. With previous versions of Winamp, I was able to do all kinds of stuff (even play quake) without a skip, but now even loading a webpage causes hideous buzzing noises.
This seems to happen whenever 98's kernel processor usage graph exceeds 20%. Time to find the old version...

go to preferences -- options and slide the process priority class all the way over to realtime. then go to the mpeg audio input plugin and change it's thread priority to highest. now try playing your music again. if it still skips, go to preferences -- plugins -- output. double click on the plugin that is highlighted (either waveout or directsound) slide the buffer slider to the right and try playing your music again. if it still skips, go back and move the slider to the right some more. continue until your music stops skipping or you get all the way to the right hand side. if you're still skipping at this point, try closing other excess programs that might be open.

That does not work on my AMD Athlon 800 Mhz with SB 64 sound card, UDMA/66 HD, which runs windows 98. ..the suggestion was actually a little bit rediculous, considering the speed of some of the computers people have mentioned. It doesn't even work if winamp is the only thing running.
It skips randomly for no reason. It is a bug.

I get this too (on an older machine - PII 266/128mb RAM laptop). But what is oddest of all is that my system is a dual-boot NT4 SP6 and Win98 one. Under NT, Winamp 2.6x works a treat. Under Win98, MP3s skip so much it's often ridiculous.
Shutting apps which only run under 98 and not NT doesn't help either (i.e. Norton Utilities and Crashguard).

i'm having a similar problem. i reformatted my harddrive this weekend and all of the sudden, this is happening. i used 2.65 lite and then downgraded to 2.5e to see if it continued, and it did. i don't understand where it came from; i've been using winamp forever and it never happened on 2.5e prior to my reformat. it doesn't actually skip, but sometimes i can be somewhere else and i'll return to my computer and hear buzzing. sometimes it goes away, sometimes i need to restart/rewind the song. it happens pretty often, so i'm hoping there's a way to fix this. thanks.

I have had the same problem that the others have had. Then it propigated to the point where it will not even open now. I have tried to unistall it and to install over it. Both did not work, the unistall would not even start. This new version has some serious problems to work out. I am running a 400/98 and 2000/128 ram , and my roomate has a 733/98/128 ram. He has had some of the same problems.
