View Full Version : editing id3v2 in winamp kills album art

if i edit an id3v2 tag in winamp after adding the art through any one of several different methods i use (audioshell, album cover art, itunes), winamp doesn't seem to be smart enough to remember that the image is in there, and it just gets lost inside the mp3. neither winamp nor any of the other programs can see the art after a winamp tag edit, but itunes and mp3 tag studio don't screw up the art if i edit the tag information after adding the art. am i doing something wrong here? is there a way to fix this behavior, or is winamp's tagging broken with regard to preserving preexisting album art?

Winamp doesn't support album art, and when saving an ID3v2 tag, it only saves the fields it knows about, which excludes album art.

Fixed in 5.13 i believe.

5.13 is not out yet, correct? hopefully art will work in *both* playlist editor and the media library, even though one is core and the other is a plugin.

so then i guess the other question is -- when winamp kills the album art, does it *erase* the album art? i've been warned that when operating on files with album art using programs that are not album art aware, sometimes the code for the art just gets absorbed into the file, bloating the size.

anybody know which is happening here? seems like that would be the difference between a missing feature and an outright flaw in the program.

afaik, 5.12 and earlier just overwrites the tags but doesn't delete the embedded img.

5.13 will not overwrite any embedded art or lyrics tags, or any utf-8 ID3v2.4 tags, when editing the standard tags in Winamp's ID3 Editor. Note, this doesn't mean that it will display those extra tags in the editor (at least not yet anyway) but it won't overwrite/delete them.

"5.13 is not out yet, correct?"

Correct

in which case, if they subsequently don't display in itunes or anything else (which is what happens), that means that the image got lost inside the mp3?

sounds like a pretty big flaw...

Yes, it was a flaw in 5.12 and all previous versions, which has now been fixed for the forthcoming 5.2

it should mean that only parts of the tag which winamp needs to modify will be modified otherwise the existing tag data will be left untouched (it's now output back to the file first if i remember the conversation about this correctly) so any images should remain viewable by the other programs you mentioned.

can anyone confirm whether this is supposed to be fixed in the current beta?

it is still happening for me. i suppose it could be some quirk of "my system," which is usually the first thing that gets blamed, but we're talking about a fresh install of windows 2000, fresh install of the most recent beta, and images that are added according to the id3 specification through a number of other programs, all of which seem to recognize the art properly.

Winamp will not display album art in a ID3 tag, but if editing the tag it should not remove it. Can you confirm that Winamp 5.2 Beta is removing the Album Art when editing tags?

Veej007

yes.

for example:

1) add art using itunes
2) copy test file out of itunes library
3) attempt to view art using audioshell, or in winamp media library via "now playing" plugin. art is there.
4) edit tag in winamp (ie, add "test" to comment field)
5) attempt to view art using audioshell, or in winamp media library via "now playing" plugin. art is gone.

also, when the art is removed, the total file size does decrease, but only by about 700 bytes. the embedded image was certainly larger than that, so i think it's getting lost in the mp3 as described above.

this is as of beta 427.

Hmm... can you possibly zip up one of these mp3's tagged by itunes (ie. one with embedded art), upload it to some webspace, and post a link to it here?

Veej007

i will try, but this happens with any file that contains art, regardless of how it got there.

have you guys tried to duplicate this?

I couldn't reproduce the problem with the files I've got, which is why I asked for one of yours (not a hope in the world that you're gonna get me to install itunes).
So... I'm still waiting....

I can confirm that this issue is now definitely fixed for the next public beta. Alas, the fix came just after build 430 went public, so you'll have to wait for the next one, heh.

not in the changelog for 449

DrO

there's a fair bit missing from the changelog, should be correctly updated for the final release. relevant changelogs for each of the betas are in the beta thread as required

That's because it was in the 436 (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?postid=1865726#post1865726) changelog.

killer. thanks guys.

Veej007

as of build 449, the program no longer deletes artwork when editing id3v2 tags!

instead, it just quits and the edit is not performed.

DJ Egg
19th February 2006, 21:13
It just quits? What do you mean? Sorry, but we can't reproduce that problem here.

Veej007
19th February 2006, 21:42
winamp just shuts down and the "test" that i had tried to add to the comment field is not there when i start it up again.

weird. any ideas?

this is happening when i edit the file from the playlist editor, by the way, not the media library. would that make a difference?

edit: objection withdrawn. doesn't seem to be happening anymore. strange.
