for some reason, winamp 5.12 does not like editing the tags correctly, ie. a mass tagging using edit selected items deletes the tag info in the library and just uses the info from the mp3 filename and puts that in the library. this only happens with 5.12 for some reason, it happens on my computer here at school and at home and none of the older editions on either machie. the tag info from any mass tagging is not done. rather than ask for tech help, i'm just going to ask two questions:
1. is the tagging function a part of a plugin?
2. what is the plugin so i can replace it?
if it can't be done with plugins, i'll just back down a version

It works fine here.
Nullsoft in_mp3.dll is the relevant input plugin.
Have you maybe installed some other 3rd-party MP3 Decoder, eg. the evil mp3pro (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=161361#mp3pro)?

it's installed, but the only thing it does is activate on relavent online streams and i have disabled it from activating completely at this time. it has been disabled for several months now. it messed up some of the streams i was listening to and i decided then that the plugin wasn't worth it. but thanks for the info, i'll see if that works.

If in_mp3pro.dll is present in the Winamp\Plugins folder, then I can guarantee that it is the cause of the problem.

yes it was. figured that out after i renamed the plugin.
i guess i was going to ask this eventually, so why not here. is there a reason that files need to be stopped to edit tags (i replaced in_mp3 from an earlier version so i don't get that anymore)? it didn't bother me that there was a pause to change tags.
