If you currently have a media player that is either a Creative Nomad, an iPod, or a PlayForSure device, and you have tried it in Winamp 5.2 with the new ml_pmp plugin, could you please post the outcome below.

I would like to collect a list of known working devices, and known problem devices in an effort to better advise people when they come with support issues, and potentially identify problems that can be fixed.

Please post in the format:

Device Manufacturer + Model Number
Firmware Version (if known)
Link To Product Website (preferably in english with available technical specs)
Working/Not Working
Plus, any additional comments.

In an effort to make it easy to parse through this thread, please keep it brief.
Any other PMP issues etc can be posted in this (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=236241) thread instead.

Cheers,
Craig

[edit:

Creative Muvos are not supported currently. This IS NOT A BUG. Update: this is now being worked on by Nullsofts newest intern.

For information regarding making your own pmp plugins which use the ml_pmp GUI, refer to this thread (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=245699).

Thankyou,

Will

Creative Zen Micro 5GB (http://uk.europe.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=214&product=10795)
Firmware: 1.11.01
Using pmp_njb.dll interface
Windows OS: WinXP sp2
Working OK

IMPORTANT

If posting about any iPod, then please first make sure that the old 3rd-party ml_ipod.dll plugin is NOT present. There will certainly be a conflict if both ml_ipod and pmp_ipod.dll are concurrently active.

And as Will said in the edit above, Creative Muvos are NOT currently supported by pmp_njb.dll, ie. we know about this, so there is no need for anyone to post about it here.

Please do not post about ANY devices which are not covered by the currently supported pmp plugins. If the 3rd-party gUSB plugin recognizes your device as a drive, but pmp_p4s doesn't, then even if your device says it's playsforsure compatible on the manufacturer's website but not on the model itself, then this means that you probably need to upgrade the firmware to the latest version first. Be warned that a firmware upgarde will reformat the device, so be sure to have all your files backed up first. Also note that p4s only works on Windows XP or higher (so remember to include Windows OS and firmware version in your post).

Apple iPod Black 60GB (http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html) (MA147LLA)
Firmware: 1.1
Interface: pmp_ipod.dll

Working: OK

Comments about the plugin (iPod):
I would to suggest, if possible, to support MPEG-4 video identification not just by extension... the .mp4 and m4v files are recognized like audio, this doesn't makes possible to sync the major part of videos supported by iPod Video 5G (this is a deeper problem, that is up to the media library)

I appreciated the transfer speed rate in the old ml_ipod plugin, i think it would be very nice to se it again in the new one.

It would be great to see also the actual used size in the portables view, and number of files too.

by now i think it's ok, waiting for all the features that are promised!

EDIT: OOPS, i forgot... YOU RULE!

@smallseb, apologies, this thread is specifically for devices that Winamp should already support.

Sony devices are currently unsupported.

Please people, dont post a bunch of wishes. What we want to see here is just that the device works, or does not work, and if certain functionality is not working for whatever reason (e.g. device recognized but capacity reported wrong, device recognized, but attempts to transfer fail) please post a quick summary.

Many thanks.

Syncing works now, just had to wait longer....but I got the impressions that he syncs too many files. So I deleted all the files on my Ipod, and synct sucessfully the empty ipod with my Media Library. Fine so far. But now I added one album, so syncing should add one album, but it does try to add several albums that are already on the ipod....not good :(

iPod, 40GB, not working. I upgraded to Winamp 5.2, and as soon as I did, the iPod support lost all track of syncing. Now, instead of trying to compare, or say, sync, all that happens is it tries to send my whole media library. Every time. 7k+ songs. Ugggh. 5.1X was great, and I look forward to the updated iPod support, cuz I hate using iTunes.

iPod, 40 GB.

Well, it doesn't look like it's working. When I tried synching, Winamp started doing *something*, however now it's just locked-up (for about 10 mins). I can see on my iPod's screen that it's being updated periodically, but I can't imagine with what (there was only 1 song that should have needed to be added to my iPod).

How do I get the old iPod plug-in back? How do I even get back into Winamp without losing my iPod's music library?

**UPDATE**
Ok, right after I posted this, Winamp came back to life. BUT...it's synching my entire music library again (7K+ files). So, if I had to recommend something, I'd ask that you add the ability to confirm the files to be synched BEFORE synching begins (the way Will Fisher's iPod plug-in functioned pre-5.2).

Please add a "copy to PC feature"

Please add an export/backup/restore (drag and drop :)) for portable device playlist(s) to PC.

Is recognized in Winamp and can copy individual songs to the player. Unfortunately, you still can't copy directly to a playlist or copy a playlist itself. It says that this will be available in a future version.

For me, until this feature becomes reality (as well as playing back songs already on the player through WA), using Winamp for PMP support is DOA.

not working, something has gone wonky with my ipod just recently, i think it began when I installed 5.2 at work but I can't be sure but I've lost a lot of songs and a playlist. Now Itunes and winamp 5.2 won't recognize the device. and winamp 5.1 with ml_ipod sees it but it thinks the device name is the name of the playlist that got lost. I'm going to reset it with the ipod updater and see what happens.

UPDATE:
I reset the ipod and had itunes create it's file system and it seems to be working fine now.

When I right click on an item in the media library and tell it to send to the ipod is there a way to have it not jump to the ipod but just stay in the view I'm in because I want to add more stuff and I trust the program to put the stuff on the ipod, I don't need to see it there right now...

But I would like to have it like this:

Sometimes Winamp crashes, when disconnecting the USB-Cable, but really only sometimes.
I'm really looking forward to the ability for copying Playlists. The optimum would be dragging the Playlist onto the device and automatically copy the files and copy the *.m3u file into the Playlist Folder, which (on this device) is a Folder on Level One.
Perhaps this post is a bit noobish, but the intension was good. :)

Will, would you recommend to turn off the new iPod-option in the preferences and install the latest version of ml_ipod instead?

Thanks!

P.S.: Meantime I tried it (reinstalling winamp 5.21 with Portable Device turned off) and would highly recommend it!

samhande,

A suggestion regarding the m240 not being recognized as a Portable Device in Winamp 5.2. You can upgrade the firmware on it from 1.00 to 1.3.0A from www.sandisk.com. Try it and you should see it recognized just fine.

It works fine once it's been initialised in iTunes
If I restore the nano I can only use it in Winamp if I install iTunes and reinitialise the nano using it.

Same problem with the ml_pod plugin. You need to have the facility to initialise an ipod.

Also it trashed the database when ml_pod was installed alongside.

Hi all.

iPod Mini 4GB, latest Softwareupdate,
winamp 5.2
working.

Due to a dirty install i encountered some funny things. 1stly ml_ipod and pmp_support were running at the same time, and somehow made it to copy music to my ipod.
ml_ipod did not show up under 'davices'.
right after that my music on the ipod was gone except for 3 albums. surprisingly i could play the 'invisible' songs (about 3GB) through my playlists via winamp AND on my ipod. On reconnect the playlists were gone.
2ndly removed pmp_support and reinstalled ml_ipod but dindn't show up in media library.
3rdly i miss the 'sync ratings' function. i would like to update my last played and ratings without syncing my already filled ipod (or did i miss tha point here?).

But these things are mere details.

Thx anyway for a great device anyway.

Creative Zen Touch, Zen Visio, and Zen Vision:M
All three running latest firmware.

Winamp works liek a charm with all three. Takes a bit to load up all the songs, but works great once it has. Real easy to edit tag info and transfer songs, although I don't use winamp to transfer songs because I'm very picky with the filename and like to the have files named by Artist - ## - Track Title.xxx where winamp names the file by ## - Track Title.xxx I'm just picky that way.

Like everyone else, would like to see the ability to play off the device with winamp, but other than that, it works great. Especially with maknig my playlists.

artist: TEAM MOD
album: TEAM MOD
song: TEAM MOD

If winamp can somewhat determine the artist and song name from the file name/folders, can't it send that information over when it's transferring to the iPod?

and don't tell me to make sure all my files have ID3 tags, I'm too lazy for that, you should do all the work, not me! ;)

One other thing, changes I make to the genre don't take effect. (Ex: I highlighted a bunch of songs with the genre "Rock", used CTRL+E to edit them, then changed the genre to "Alternative"). When I went to my mp3 Player, played one of the songs, and noticed that the genre still says "Rock". Anotherwords, genre changes don't work when I change them directly from the player's HD in Winamp. Haven't tested it with other ID3 elements yet.

What's your Windows OS? (see 2nd post in thread).
Firmware v2.x uses the PlaysForSure interface (pmp_p4s.dll)
but P4S only works on WinXP or higher.

My Zen Micro 5GB works fine with firmware 1.x using pmp_njb interface
(I don't need support for p4s/wma/drm so no need for me to upgrade the firmware).

You should read this thread:

Portable Device Support in Winamp (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=236241&highlight=mlpmp)

ml_pmp (portable media player) is the basic media library plugin, wich provides an API.

The API allows the creating of pmp plugins to support other devices.

Winamp is bundled with 3 ml_pmp plugins:

pmp_ipod (Apple Ipod), pmp_njb (Creative) and pmp_p4s (Plays for Sure)

I had my iPod (5th gen 30 gig) plugged in and accessed by winamp the other day. Worked fine. I was just playing music from the ipod on my work computer, not transferring anything. Then I closed winamp and used the windows "Safely remove hardware" thing in the system tray to disconnect the ipod. When I tried to have the ipod play some music in the car on the way home it seemed like the database had been FUBAR'd somehow. The only songs I could access were the ones I had put into the on-the-go playlist. When I reconnected the ipod to my home computer winamp now thought the ipod's name was "on the go" and there were only those two songs available.

The other songs are still on the ipod though. Copypod can see/read them just fine.

This is the second time something like this has happened with my ipod on winamp, the first time I thought it was because itunes and winamp were both accessing it at the same time, but this time itunes was not in the equation.

Is there anyway, or any program that can rebuild the ipod DB? because I really don't want to reload all that stuff when it's already on there.

Sorry if I just turned this into a tech support thread, just thought you should know that this has happened a couple times to me now.

Now that I've been using the PMP support for a few days with my Creative Zen Sleek Photo, I must add that the new WinAmp seems a little crashy. Irregular problems with the portable device showing in Media Library. Often takes unplugging and re-pulgging a few times and/or restarting WinAmp. Sometimes crashes when this occurs.

side note:I'm also having occaisional crashes when messing with a lot of ID3 tags.

Pertinent knowledge-base articles at Normsoft:

The bottom line:

Pocket Tunes's MTP support works with Windows Media Player 10, but not with Winamp.

Symptoms:

Upon loading Pocket Tunes on the Palm, the MTP device is detected correctly by Winamp. However, when syncing starts, Winamp hangs for a full minute before transferring each file in the playlist. Yes, a full minute *for each file*.

The files end up being transferred correctly (or seem to, as I only waited for 3 files), as well as the corresponding playlist. But the 1 minute+ per file is obviously a deal breaker.

Re-edit (this is the last time, i hope :D)

Well, it seems to work when it wants to work.
I've tried with a couple of files and seemingly all gone well, but if i try with a large amount of files (or try to create a playlist on the device, as i did just a moment ago) it doesn't update the list on the player.
I know the two processes used to do this are "lime.exe" and "limealive.exe", and they were running, but i have no way to check if something is going on or not when i eject the player, cause, as i said, no window appears to show anything.
Maybe i just have to wait long enough to let "limes" update it, i don't know.

I think i will try to find a hacked firmware :D
I'll let you know, bye!

Well, p4s (which i assume is the interface you are using) is a transfer protocol with associated api. Quite why that particular player uses a third party app in the mix too, i couldnt say. But obviously this appears to be an issue with the manufacturer and p4s, than anything else.

Yes, that's a p4s device.
So it's a philps problem, i knew it, but what i can't explain is why WMP does work and winamp does not.
Or better, why can't winamp show that window, even if it's trying to update the files list?

Hope this problem can be cleared up. OR if anyone knows how i could correct the problem myself let me know. ANy help would be nice. I wanna change the files ive got in there, The Bike ride to work is getting boring with the same old beats.

As many have alluded to before I hate to turn this into a text support thread but I have an important question.

After upgrading to 5.22 the other day I added tracks to my iPod for the first time in days. Now, when viewing the artist list, the iPod does not ignore the leading "the" on artist names, for example, "The Beatles" is listed under "T" instead of "B" as it always has been, same for the "The Doors" etc. All artists appear this way now.

I really don't think it can be anything other than the winamp plugin that changed this because I haven't done anything to my iPod with any other software. Any help, suggestions, tips, etc would be greatly appreciated.

/I've noticed that when I try to organise my music by size, it instead organises it by artist... :igor: Winamp stopped detecting my Zen Sleek after I upgraded from Winamp 5.22 to 5.24.        I'd go back to 5.22, but WinampHeaven only has the stripped-down version available.

I have a 3rd Gen iPod. I don't know what firmware version it has. I have a WinXP machine, and Winamp 5.24. I don't have any of the old portable device plug-ins (just installed Winamp today).

The first time I plugged in my iPod, Winamp recognized it. I didn't try to synch any files at that point.

The second (and third and fourth and fifth) time I plugged in my iPod, Winamp did not recognize it. I have tried allowing iPodService.exe (I think that's the filename) to run in the background, to not run in the background, to restart Winamp, to connect before starting Winamp, to connect after starting Winamp, to reboot Windows, and all variations that I can think of.

I can't think of anything that changed between my first and second tries.

What else can I try to get Winamp to recognize my iPod? Thanks to anyone who can help... I'm REALLY looking forward to getting iTunes off my computer! So far I'm very happy with Winamp (although I've spent all day learning the "ins and outs" and configuring it  )

Nicole

EDIT: I confirmed that I have the latest firmware edition (2.3).

EDIT AGAIN: iTunes no longer recognizes my iPod, either. When I plug in the iPod, Windows Explorer launches (and I can see my files via WE, so I know the iPod itself is ok). GRR.

FINAL EDIT for tonight because I'm quitting: iTunes just told me that I need to restore my iPod to the factory settings. It's a d*mn good thing that I have my music backed up in several places, because if I didn't, I'd be screwed. <is very, very frustrated at the moment>

Ok, so I lied, I didn't quit... I can never leave a problem unsolved. Since I have a workaround (I think), I'm going to put it in a new post... is that ok?

1. I wiped clean the iPod using the "Restore" function on the most recent version of the iPod Update Software.

2. I connected the iPod to the computer, launched iTunes, and let iTunes do its formatting thing ("Hello, my name is iTunes, how do you do? Pleasure to meet you, Sr. iPod").

3. I set the iPod to manual update AND deselected "launch iTunes when iPod is attached" within iTunes Preferences window.

4. I disconnected the iPod, shut down the computer, and re-booted.

5. I used the Task Manager to kill iPodService.exe, launched Winamp, and connected the iPod. Winamp recognized the iPod (yes!). I attempted to add an album. The queue showed a song titled "-" with the status "can't open file." I couldn't erase that file, no matter what I did, and no files below it would synch.

6. I fixed myself a drink.

7. I disconnected the iPod and shut down Winamp. THEN I ran iPodService.exe, restarted Winamp, connected the iPod, and Winamp recognized it.

8. NOW the problem is that I can synch a small and random number of songs before the same thing happens: it will do a few songs and just halt. One will say "Done," the next will say "Waiting," and nothing happens. This means that I'm adding my songs to my iPod one at a time, for all 5,000 songs, disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod every few minutes. <goes to get another drink> What gives?

I realized later that I could probably have saved the music on my iPod, although in the end, that was pointless, because I plan to trash iTunes ASAP (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=240152&highlight=iPod+database).

Ok, I hope that was helpful to someone... the secret seems to be the iPodService.exe.

Ok, I went to use my iPod at work today, and there is no music on it. Last night, however, it *appeared* that I uploaded several dozen albums to it successfully. Where did they go?

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this. Until then, it's back to iTunes... and if I can't get this figured out, it's a permanent switch. Too bad :-( but I've wasted too much time on this already :-(

Detects fine, and even can get the file listing (files I had sucessfully sync'ed using WMP10 previously) from both the internal and the removable memory card, but trying to sync any files leads to Winamp crashing immediately. It pulls up the "Winamp Portables" tab in ML with the song in queue to sync and then Windows pops up the Winamp has encountered and error dialog.

Zen Xtra with PFS firmware, and an 80Gb disk that now holds > 70Gb. It all works in Winamp including streaming off the player in Beta 5.25. Yum. Hooray!

Two mild hassles.
1) It takes quite some time to initialise. Maybe 2-3 minutes. I guess that's my fault for having such a fat device.

2) I was expecting playing tracks off the player to work via copy to local disk and then playing the file as normal in Winamp. What it seems to do is to copy to a temproary area and then stream the file. The downside to this is that Last.Fm won't scrobble streamed tracks. So while it all works from your end, my listening isn't turning up in Last.FM. Oh well.

Oh well. having just seen your post on the last.fm forums as well (but i've not got my account details on this machine so i'll post here), as things currently stand i don't believe other plugins (such as the AS plugin) can query metadata from streamed media without other changes being made to the input plugins (ref here) (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=255552) so for the moment you're really looking at a winamp side change/implementation for such a feature (though of course the AS plugin would then need some way of knowing if it's a local streamed file from the portable device but ofcourse without the streamed metadata support that's pretty much pointless for the time being)

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess we're probably stuck with this. And I can understand why AS can't pick up streams.

The only solution I can think of in ml_pmp is to play the temporary file as if it was part of the media library. Because it's a valid local file, it should have the metadata in it. But I have no idea if that approach is possible. I suspect it won't be possible to put the temporary file temporarily into the media library and play it from there, then removing it afterwards.

There's a certain irony here. I've been copying files by hand off the player and into a temporary area on my hard disk, purely so that winamp could play them and AS pick them up. Maybe I should write some code completely independent of Winamp to do this.

will
26th September 2006, 14:24
sorry, but http streaming is the only way it can work reliably.

Is the AS plugin open source? Because if it is, you could just extract the metadata from the url, which is always of the form:
http://127.0.0.1:<port>/?a=Artist&l=Album&t=Title&d=Device;.ext
Remember to urldecode the artist, album and title parameters!

Well, I didn't have the latest firmware but just updated that. I looked under the plugins directory and saw pmp_usb.dll listed and under Portables in the Preferences window USB Device v0.5 is listed under Plugins. None of that matters though. Still freezes.

EDIT:
I tried the Autofill method again and while at first it seemed like it froze again after a few minutes it came back and said it would be putting X-number of files on my device. I clicked ok and it went about its business. I'll run it a few more times and post my results.

I found a way. I'm using the old last.fm 1.1.10 plugin. There's a hidden registry key. Set allowhttp in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Audioscrobbler\Winamp Plugin
to 1 and it reports the stream from my PMP correctly. If the value doesn't exist, create it. Hooray!

Tried again after I got some new batteries. Same problem occurs. Autofill chokes everything. I have an Athlon XP 3200+ 2.20GHz, 1GB RAM. I had Taskmanager open when I pressed Autofill and watched as my CPU spiked to 100% and ran steady at that rate. RAM stayed flat at around 345MB used.

Again, iRiver T30MX. I don't think it has anything to do with the device connected. These problems are caused by the program.

My iPod will sync with my media library just fine initally. However, when I remove a file from the media library and re-sync my iPod, it goes through the process of removing the file(s) on my iPod. When I eject my iPod, and reconnect it, the iPod's media library shows the files are still there when they are really not. The media files themselves are gone, but it still shows they are there. I can manually remove them and it works just fine. The sync feature is not removing the "tag" itself.

OK, I don't know where else to look or ask this but I'll try here. Does anyone know why my play counts and ratings don't get written (or saved) on my ipod?

Here's what happens:

1. I use winamp at work, play songs, rate them etc.
2. Then I eject and take my ipod home.
3. When i'm home, I plug in my ipod, and open iTunes.
4. When iTunes is done syncing, none of the songs that I played earlier that day, or rated, show as having been played (or rated). It's like I never listened to any of the music.

Is this a known issue? Any way to fix? Workarounds upgrades?

Hello there,

Just a quick message to thank all those involved with the latest WinAMP - 5.31 is absolutely terrific. The PMP-USB support is working beautifully: the drive is detected correctly every time, and the database loads and sorts in just a few seconds.

I'm looking forward to the next wave of improvements - perhaps the ability to modify the columns in the PMP view?

Keep up the great work!

Are you trying this on a computer at work? It sounds as if some firewall program is blocking MP3 streams.

Unfortunately, yes. The PlaysForSure protocol doesn't support direct-from-device playback, so Winamp must copy the file to a temporary location first.

I'm in University Accommodation, but I wouldn't have thought that my computer would be affected by that. I've turned my firewall off, no difference. The address that both wma and mp3 use is:

http://127.0.0.1:54387/ [stuff]

would it be possible for winamp to load the next song in the playlist to the temporary location so the playback is seamless?

Also, this is creative, i thought there was a specific creative plugin?

It's kinda hard to explain, but I'll try anyway. When ever I try to sync music, the music either gets put on the player or it doesn't(it just happens with random files, never the same files either). There is also something weird that happens with some files that have an error. for example, last week when I was trying to sync an album I have on my computer, every file got an error, so I decided to try again and every file was put on the device. When I went to play the music on the device there was two of every file, one was the right song and the other was a different song than what the name was.

I'm sorry if this doesn't make much sense, ask if you want me to explain differently.

Have x2 Ipod Shuffles to upload music to and recently upgraded to Winamp5.32. Works really well for the first Ipod no problem, but the second is not appearing under the list of portable devices in Winamp. It appears & behaves the same in Windows Explorer. Is this a hardware/software problem with the ipod shuffle do you think, or is there any limitation to connecting multiple ipods to a single pc?

Above: Have sorted it since. 2nd Ipod was short some formatting files etc. So whether right thing to do or not just copied from one to the other. I did notice that when removing tracks from the Ipod Shuffle in Winamp, the tracks no longer appeared but were not physically removed, i.e., no more space was created. But you can remove them through Windows Explorer anyway.

I put Winamp on my iPod in a folder and have the iPod plugin on there also. When I go into the Media Library and go to play any song it doesn't play and just displays letters in the information bar... like "MEGH" or something like that. The music is definitely on there I'm listening to it plugged into speakers but I wanna use Winamp.

Firmware is 1.2.1 (I think, the latest anyway)
Winamp = latest

Here's the deal, before Winamp I used iTunes. Some of the songs I have been transferring now with Winamp seemed to have "overwriten" my older ones. I just played Death from Above and was hearing Bloc Party. The tags still displayed "Death from Above" and even the file length was that from the original file I think.

I need to investigate when I have time if I can fix it with something somehow. Just a heads up.

I haven't read most of the posts here as I'm just looking to determine if a device I'm considering buying will work.

Are you aware that you can customize the track names in Winamp? You can place pretty much any of the items you want in just about any order.

Firmware: 1.10
Winamp Version: 5.32
Status: Working somewhat, though there are problems...

I updated Activesync to the newest version so that I could try out pmp_activesync. As it is, my problem is that Winamp doesn't see my 1gig SD card's storage space. I can tell it to send files there, and it does, but it stops when it believes that the device is full. (Very quickly, as it only has 64 megs of internal space.)

Obviously, the internal space does not change as files are sent across, but Winamp doesn't even try to send more than a couple files at once because it insists the device won't hold it.

Device: Toshiba Gigabeat S60 (or just Gigabeat S)
Firmware: Windows Mobile Software for Portable Media Centers, Version 2.11 (632), gigabeat S, Platform Version 1.1 (632.4)
Links: http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/adet.to?seg=HHO&poid=335575 or a spec sheet, in PDF format, here: http://tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/models/MES60VK/docs/MES60VK_spec.pdf
Status: Half-Working

This is tricky.
The player seems to work halfway in most respects. 10% of the time, Winamp will recognize it and show metadata and all that good stuff, but more often it will just show 'Loading gigabeat S...' forever, without ever loading the player in a usable way. This is incredibly frustrating, as I never know when the player will work; I've tried restarting Winamp, disconnecting the device, reconnecting the device, starting with the device on, starting with it off, and many other 'tricks' that all seem fruitless; it just works or just doesn't work, in no pattern I can determine.

When transferring media when it *does* work, Ratings are never transferred, and any albums with special characters (e.g. : * / ?) transfer as 'Unknown Album'. (I guess the player reads folder structure, and not metadata?) This is mainly a problem because the files on the player are then considered 'Not in my library', and the next time I sync up, they're troublesome... I had 5 copies of one song on the player, not realizing that Winamp was loading it fresh each time thinking it wasn't on the player.

As a further annoyance, I can never transfer more than 50-100 songs at a time before the device randomly disconnects, but I think that's my USB port, not Winamp... It does that with my other mp3 player, too, and my external hard drive. It's a problem, though, because I can only load 50-100 songs at a time, then I have to reload the player in winamp, which doesn't often work.
I love Winamp too much to want to use Windows Media Player for this device, and WMP has issues too (being WMP and all)... If I can't get it to work in Winamp more reliably, I'm probably gonna return it.

I don't seem to be having the same problems (other than the file duplication) as jcdberkeley, but some notes: I primarily use MediaMonkey for synching, because WinAmp still lacks album art support, and I've noticed MediaMonkey synchs the files in a fundamentally different way than WinAmp does. An album synched with MM will have the track numbers on the device, but not on the file name, whereas WinAmp synched albums will be the opposite. However, in the Genre menu, for the most part, MM synched albums will be sorted by song title, with no album view in the Genre menu, and WinAmp synched will have proper albums. Synching Playlists works perfectly, however, and if a song is in a Playlist that isn't on the device (regardless of which program was used to synch the other songs on the playlist), it will synch that song over as well. Hopefully Album Art will get added in to WinAmp in the near future, because I'd much rather just be using WinAmp for all my device synching, instead of switching back and forth with two programs.
One more note, may be helpful, may not: MediaMonkey does not recognize songs that have been synched with WinAmp as the same songs as exist in MediaMonkey's library, and will synch everything over again, creating two of each song. WinAmp WILL recognize songs that have been synched with MediaMonkey as being the same as in the WinAmp Library, and will not re-synch them.

Winamp version: 5.33
Portable Device: 1st gen 512mB iPod Shuffle
Firmware version: not sure of the version number, but it's the most recent/last firmware update that Apple had for the 1st gen shuffles.
Working?: Mostly.

After having nothing but frustration with iTunes not adding songs to my shuffle, I stopped using it for a while and started using WinAmp & the old plugin. No problems. It was wonderful.

Then all of a sudden, WinAmp decided it was going to stop working altogether. I uninstalled, installed the latest version, and started having problems with it recognizing my shuffle. Reset the shuffle using Apple's reset utility, and still couldn't get WinAmp to work, but iTunes (after upgrading to the latest version) worked fine.

Decided to try reinstalling WinAmp 1 more time, this time deleting out all the old files (thinking it might be a conflict between the plugins). Now it *mostly* works, and iTunes doesn't recognize my shuffle at all (stating that a folder is missing, despite "resetting/restoring" the shuffle *yet again*).

The only issue I'm having on a consistant basis is that some songs won't transfer. I'll drag one from the library, drop into my iPod, it will start transferring, and then my iPod just disappears and pops back a few seconds later - and the song hasn't transferred. Repeated attempts yield the same result. After a few minutes, I did try the "right click on song and "send to" the iPod, and it seems to have worked successfully. It's not limited to one song in particular - seems to happen fairly randomly.

Mind you, I'm not 100% convinced that this is a problem with WinAmp and NOT a problem with my Shuffle, particularly given that iTunes now won't write to the Shuffle. I am planning on getting a 30G iPod Video w/in the next month, and will update with how that works.

The only other thing is that all my playcounts are 0 on the shuffle, regardless of what they actually are, but that's not critical for me :)

Firmware: 1.105
Winamp: 5.33
OS: XP Pro SP2
Windows Media Player: 11.0.5721.5145

Status: Flaky

On one machine it usually works as long as you plug it in before starting Winamp. On another (a very new machine) it has only worked once, no matter when I plug it in or whether I've rebooted recently or not.

When it works, it works pretty well. You can sync files or Media Library playlists and they'll be copied over. Deleting works OK as well. I don't have a lot of experience with the Media Library (I only started using it so I could put playlists on this player!) so I don't know if any of its more spiffy features work with the player. I'd imagine not.

When it doesn't work Winamp almost always crashes with a generic "instruction at xxx referenced memory at yyy" error, though occasionally it just quits with no message at all. There's a rather long delay between plugging or launching and Winamp crashing or quitting. If the Media Library is open, under Portables you can see "Loading Insignia Player", then briefly "Loading" goes away, then it dies.

When trying to figure things out originally I wiped the player's memory once. Afterwards Winamp kept telling me that it couldn't create folders on the device. I believe I did a one-file sync with WMP and then things started working again with Winamp, but I don't remember now.

On both machines I haven't had any trouble using WMP11 to sync files and playlists.

Hope this helps.

First of all thank you so much winamp for having ipod support,iTunes would not correctly read tags on almost half my music even cd's that were ripped with itunes, so my ipod had duplicate and unknown artists all over it, I would spend hours every week fixing it. Updating on my previous entry:

My 1st Gen 512k Shuffle decided to do the "I'm only going to play 15 songs, and not let you add anything to me" trick again. I restored it to factory settings - again - and now iTunes will recognize it (and I'm shuddering at the very thought of having to use it, because library support is non-existent, but that's another post for a different forum) and WinAmp won't find it at all. Again.

Again, not certain this is a WinAmp thing; it could easily be my Shuffle giving up it's last breath. I suppose I'll find out more when I get a different/new iPod (now probably going with a 4G Nano rather than the 30G iPod Video).

And I'm seriously ready to beat my head against the wall.

It works fine.

DJ Egg
3rd May 2007, 14:22
But Winamp 5.0 didn't have any native support for Portable Players or Devices.
ml_pmp wasn't implemented until v5.2

v5.0 is old and full of bugs, some critical.

You should install 5.33 (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=265707), and then wait for 5.35
(because as I said, P4S device support is broken in 5.34, ie. because it crashes on sync/transfers, but is fixed again for 5.35, coming soon).

At a guess, you're using v5.0 with v5.3x's ml_pmp/pmp_p4s support.

There's also a chance that your media library database will have become corrupted if downgrading to any version prior to 5.33, because 5.33 & 5.34 use a unicode based database, whereas the mldb in 5.32 and earlier was still non-unicode (ansi) based.

To resolve, you'll need to nuke the database and reimport all your media again.

I use last.fm with my Zen/Winamp too. What you want to do is make sure you have the corrent plug-in/software for WINAMP, not for your Zen, because the mp3 player you use is irrelevant to last.fm. What I did when I first installed Winamp was I went to my last.fm software on my computer and told it to load/download the plug in for winamp. After that was installed my last.fm had no trouble reading my music. Im not completely familiar with your problem, actually, but just make sure you have the right plug-in for Winamp.

This question was already answered. See link below.

Previous Post (http://forums.winamp.com/register.php?a=act&u=225932&i=35330625)

Basically, just use regedit and go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Audioscrobbler\Winamp Plugin
Make a new string variable (right click on winamp plugin folder on left) then double click on the new variable and type '1' without quotes. You're done. Unfortunately, you won't be able to use the features of the new last.fm at the same time, but at least you'll be able to scrobble your tracks.

I was having issues with WinAmp not recognizing my Nano, until I upgraded to the 5.34B. Apparently, iTunes 7.x has a wonderful little "update" in it which causes something to happen with the Nano so it's unreadable by anything except iTunes. Fortunately, WinAmp fixed this issue.

The only problem I'm having now is that every so often, I'll find an MP3 that worked fine on my shuffle, but crashes my Nano. The only fix I've found is to re-download the mp3 (which works). Other than that, I've had 0 problems with WinAmp and my Nano.

Sorry for sounding like an idiot (which I am by the way), but I don’t have "Winamp Plugin" under Audioscrobbler in regedit, only "WMP Plugin".

Any ideas?

Cheers

FWIW, 5.35 didn't make anything better. When I plug it in on my main machine, Winamp crashes. Same as 5.33.

Hope this helps.

Device: Motorolla E398/ROKR E1 Cellular phone
Firmware: 49R
Interface: pmp_usb;

All features working but when syncing have a "slow" interface.
I can working and listen music but it's very-very slow.

I think it's because only USB 1.1 supported, so only 150 Kb/s speed.

Me again:
Device: Toshiba Gigabeat S60 (or just Gigabeat S)
Firmware: Windows Mobile Software for Portable Media Centers, Version 2.11 (632), gigabeat S, Platform Version 1.1 (632.4)

With the 5.5 upgrade, Album data doesn't synch at all. The correct album folders are created in the Media/Music directory on the device, but the files don't seem to be getting tagged with the metadata during the transfer. Not even the playlist workaround (toss album into playlist, synch playlist instead of album, everything transfers okay) from previous versions works any more.

With the new 5.5 and pmp_ipod 0.7, I got it to recognize my brother's iPod Nano 1GB model, but it rearranged the playlist on him (we think it's by album name) and after installing iTunes it wants us to format it before we can edit the playlist in iTunes.

It works, but it completely rearranged the playlist. Any idea how to get it back to the way it was?

is the pmp_ipod plugin somwhow built in winamp portable?
pmp_ipod is not working with my ipod classic, so I have reverted to ml_ipod on my full winamp install.

I would like to put winamp portable on my ipod (used as a harddrive) to allow me to play/organize/download/upload my music from any computer (can I rip CDs to MP3s too?)

Sansa e260
firmware 01.02.15F
Windows XP Pro

MTP-Mode

Only album art embedded in mp3 tags does work. No *.jpg files are transfered at all.
Don't know if Winamp supports transfering album arts for non-iPods by now.

Another problem is character replacing when syncing files. Winamp replaces some special chars like * with other chars before transfering the songs to the device.

Next time it compares the local ml and the device (when syncing again), it does not replace the chars before comparison.

Each file is recognised as a "new" file which is not in the local ml.

See this thread (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=282108) for more details.

For iPod shuffle, Winamp works great. Well even better than iTunes.
But for my iPod nano video, it works, but is way to limited, and I was forced to install iTunes just to get things done properly, which I'm not impressed with having to do, cuz iYunes is a god awful program.
Winamp doesn't support much features of the iPods, also doesn't do a proper job with album art and video screenshots.
So if I use Winamp to send anything over, I still have to fix things up with iTunes, just to get it lookin good.
Sure hope some day Winamp will have full iPod support, and I can get rid of iTunes forever, lol.

Player is recognised and plays back fine, album art present. Trying to move files to or from the ipod using Winamp either on the ipod or on my desktop nukes the ipod databases - MP3s are still on device and can be played in Winamp, the ipod itself reports "no music"

Hi guys. I have an 80 gig 'new classic ipod'. Winamp works great syncing the music files and allowing me to manage my ipod. However, I have some torrent movie files I have and I was wondering if there was a way to convert those video files and sync them to my device without having to use itunes?

Is that something that winamp can do or in there a program that will work in unison to allow me to convert these movie files and put them on my ipod using winamp and without using itunes? Thanks in advance for the help.

First off, they aren't "torrent movie files", they are movies you downloading via torrent files/torrent app.
Anyways, most likely they are not already in mp4 format, so you will need to convert them.
I recommend Xilisoft Video Converter, or find some other video converter.
Hope that helps.
