Problem with playlist title display for WAV files

Going from Winamp 5.12 to 5.2 or 5.21 results in the playlist display getting screwed up. Going back restores it. I see that some changes were made to metadata handling between 5.1x & 5.2x, so perhaps this is the source of the problem?

I have a folder full of music files in .WAV format (CD rips) that look something like this: "2 Unlimited - no-one.wav" and I want them to be displayed just as they are. Winamp prior to 5.2 was just fine in this respect.

However, I can no longer make Winamp display just the filename, as above. This particular example gets converted to: "Radio Edit".

Another example is: "Anastacia - Sick And Tired (electrochill remix).wav" changes to "Sick And Tired (electrochill remix)"

This bug affects every single file.

I have tried the following, to no avail:

- Clean install on another computer
- Switched off the use of metadata for playlist formatting in the media library configuration
- Turned off advanced title formatting
- Changed to the classic skin
- Removed the Predixis plugin
- Removed the media library plugin
- Removed the jump to file plugin
- Torn my hair out! (that one hurt <g>)

The only slight change I could make to the display, was to change the options in Preferences>Titles. Setting it to read meta data only when the file is played, caused the correct filename to be displayed until the file was clicked in the playlist editor window. Winamp appears to be getting fake metadata from somewhere and "intelligently" reformatting my playlist display.

I'd really appreciate a fix for this and would like to thank the Winamp dev team for all their hard work in producing this application.

Hi. I've split your post from the sticky thread, mainly because it requires a reply.

Firstly, you need to re-enable Advanced Title Formatting

Try the default string first

[%artist% - ]$if2(%title%,$filepart(%filename%))

If the problem persists, what happens if the ATF string is set to just:

$filepart(%filename%)

Do you just get the filename displayed now?


Reasons for why this might be happening...

Did you add these WAV files to the local media library database?

WAV files don't normally have any metadata, so the containing folder and filename are the determining factors in deciding artist, album, title.

If "smart detect" (or "simple") is selected in:
Prefs > Media Library > Watch Folders tab > Configure button
then the media library will attempt to guess the metadata.
The solution here would be to checkmark "No guessing"
and then remove and reimport the WAV files from/to the library.

If the WAV files haven't been imported into the library,
but if "Use Library title information for Playlist Item Formatting" is checkmarked in:
Prefs > Media Library > Library Options tab > Modify Settings button,
then the playlist will still attempt to guess the (non-existent) metadata if "no guessing" is not checkmarked in the aforementioned settings screen.

Thanks for your quick response DJ. Putting $filepart(%filename%) fixed it and I can now enjoy my Winamp again :) With the 5.1x versions though, I didn't have to set any advanced formatting and fiddling with the media library settings never screwed up the playlist display; it always just displayed the filename. I don't know why the difference here, except perhaps because of the reworked metadata handling listed in the 5.2 changelog?
Did you add these WAV files to the local media library database?
I use Winamp very simply: I just have the playlist editor window open and click on the Add button to add the folder. I never bother with saving playlists or advanced media functions.

Sorry I forgot to mention the following two points you ask about, but I did look at these options and they had no effect on the problem. However, I did mention that I even removed the Predixis and media library plugins which, while drastic, can reasonably be expected to disable any filename guessing, for the purposes of troubleshooting.

I unchecked use library information, too. I even checked do not load the media library and cleared my already empty media library.

It still looks to me like Winamp is trying to guess the names, even when told not to, hence it still looks like a bug to me. Well, at least I can put in that formatting string and get my proper filenames. Thanks again for your help. :)
