View Full Version : Settle an argument...

I'm engaged in an argument with a few users on another forum, iAudio to be exact. They claim winamp is "stoneage", both sound and code compared to iAudio's jetAudio. But I have been defending winamp's flexability and longevity. They also claim winamp is "dead" and just doesn't know it yet.
1. Is winamp 16 or 32 bit?
2. Is winamp's output 16 or 32 bit?
3. How would rate winamp vs. jetAudio?

jetAudio?

Yup...
jetAudio (http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/jetaudio/) .
If you look at the hardware products, I have an A2 20gig player, which is how I was introduced to jetAudio. Otherwise I would have never heard of it either.
Here is a link (http://www.cowonamerica.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6998) to the thread I am talking about.

Is your soundcard 32 bit? Does the rest of your equipment have a dynamic range of 192dB*? Is your room absolutely soundproof and you want to hear music at a level that would instantly make you deaf?
Then simply get in_!mpg123 and set it to 32bit (or even 64).
*actually a lot more since it's floating point (too lazy to calculate or look it up)

Ehhh.... What are you talking about?

Well, why do you want 32bit output?

I think you are misunderstanding me here... I'm the one defending winamp on the other forum. JetAudio doesn't do what I want... it doesn't have the media browser, the playlist, and the video window in detachable segments the way I like it. I was simply asking a few questions in hopes of getting answers that will support my argument of "jetAudio < Winamp".
I never said I wanted 32bit output... geez...

Then ask them why they want it. :D
Seriously, Winamp supports high resolution output for many formats (it just gained 32bit wav support).
DSP/Effect plug-ins and the equalizer only work at 16bit though.
Edit: Just read a bit of the thread, looks like the Jet Audio fans mostly love its DSPs.
The difference is: Winamp doesn't (change the) sound at all.
If their speakers need heavy DSP processing to not sound like empty coke bottles that's their problem. :p

Well, I don't use any DSP/Effect plugins, or the equalizer. I also exclusively use FLAC now as well. Does that format have 32bit support? Can you tell me what other formats are supported with 32bit output?
What I really can't understand is why Sven (the one I am arguing with for the most part) is insisting on jetAudio being so much better when he listens to MP3's and internet broadcasts... I mean really, if anything is stone age here it is the MP3 format and low quality internet streams.
One more thing, can anyone tell me when full 32bit will be implimented in winamp (EQ, plugins, etc...)?

Low quality sources may actually benefit from DSPing more than high quality ones (same as with speakers).
FLAC supports high resolution, but - CDs are 16bit (and 2 channel).
