View Full Version : cd burner not writing at full speed
I've got a BenQ DQ1640 and can't seem to make it burn higher than 16x in Nero. The drive is capable of writing up to speeds of 48x for CDs and 16X for DVDs and the discs I am using are the same. I have the latest firmware for it so I know that's not the problem. And yes, I'm trying to burn CDs and not DVDs, of which burn at 16x as well and is irrelevant right now.
Any suggestions?

Are you sure the cds allow the burner to go higher then 16. If they do buy another cd burner.
I already said the CDs I'm using are capable of 48x. And no, I'm not buying another CD burner because I know for a fact that it's not been doing this since I got it only a few months ago. I'm sure there's a setting somewhere in Nero.. does anyone know?

It seems we have a case of the all too common "it worked yesterday syndrome" Things don't usually just stop working like that. The entire drive would most likely fail. You must have changed something.

Really, there are too many variables.
It could be the latest drivers acting up, an incompatibility with the CDs (if you're not using the same exact ones you were using before) a setting in Nero (not familiar enough with that program to troubleshoot, sorry), or lots of other things.
Is the drive currently only acting up with Nero? If so, it's almost certainly a setting. There's an option to have Nero determine the best write speed; check if it's doing that and keeping the speed down to minimize errors.

It might be more prudent to ask your question here (http://ww2.nero.com/enu/Support.html) or here (http://support.benq.com/front/benqmain.asp), if you have not already done so. If you think the issue is Nero specific you can test that hypothesis by using another CD burning software (http://www.download.com/Burn4Free-CD-DVD/3000-2646-10217894.html?part=dl-Burn4Free&subj=dl&tag=button) and then progress from there.
Have you tried burning something you *know* burned faster than 16X? IIRC, drivers don't burn at 48x all the way through. They start slow and speed up as it approaches the outer edge.
Are you using a (legal) purchased version of Nero? I wonder if it restricts burning speed after foo number of days.
Wierd.. I'm using the Memorex black CD-Rs and on the front of them it says 40x but when I do the CD Info tool on Nero, it says they're only 16x. I haven't tried any other CD-Rs because I have none. Maybe this is why I just noticed it only burning at 16x because I only recently got these discs.
It has nothing to do with Nero being legit or not, Nero doesn't do that in the first place. I also extremely doubt that it has anything to do with the software or hardware at this stage, but instead the medium.

Be quiet--don't be a jerk. It has nothing to do with that.

Listen, I work at a computer-store. BenQ is like the trash. Don't expect quality. But to the case, there can be several reasons. What kinda medium do you burn off? Are you burning from DvD to DvD or from disk to DvD or what? What kinda DMA mode do your hard-drives run?
