Hi, I am thinking about ordering a server from 1&1 as it looks like a very good deal - at http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/ServerRoot (sorry if links to hosts are not allowed) - I'm thinking about the £59.99 one as I don't need much space.

It seems like the best deal I've seen, as you get "Unlimited Traffic with 100 MBit data transfer speed" which would in theory allow me to host about 700 listeners (would be nice to actually have that many! lol). I think one of my current shoutcast hosts uses them as well and they seem reliable.

I just wanted to see if anyone else is using them and if you have found them to be ok. I use 1&1 for domain registration already and have had no real problems with them before. I know that they have a bad reputation for support, but if the servers are reliable then that probably doesnt matter to be honest - anyone got any advice?

Thanks

I'm using the exact same package my friend.

Dont get fooled by the "100mbit" as this goes down to 10mbit once you have used 1000gb of traffic... then you can goto your admin panel and reset it back to 100mbit (for 250gb transfer than you go back to 10mbit, just repeat the reset).

I'v got a couple of these (one linux, other w2k3) and they seem to do the job nicely,

Hope this helps,
Regards.

Hi djrm, yes I did read the thing about the limit on traffic, but looks like you can override that as much as you need.

Thanks for the reply :)

Most unmetered plans like this that seem too good to be true normally are. They offer a 100Mbps pipe but it's normally shared bandwidth and the chances of maintaining that consistently are kinda slim - most at best can support 10 - 30 Mpbs steady if that. But for the price even a 10Mbps steady feed is worth the cost.

Yea that is definately shared, it won't be long until bandwidth integrity is effected at those rates.

Bad idea, you should search WHT for some reviews on that company. I've heard some scary stories.

the main reason that I asked was because my current host seems to be using 1and1. They have been reliable (although I have only been with them for a couple of months), so they must be getting a good service.

After looking around, I have noticed that there are a lot of people not happy with their service, but that always seems to be customers based in USA (1and1.com), but I have seen people that are happy with the service based in the UK (1and1.co.uk) - any ideas on this?

1and1 is one of these "huge" companys who focus i'd say on bringing in the masses and offering an "Okay" service as apposed to creating a really good quality offering, they are more suited to website hosting than streaming media (Which as we all know needs a lot of good quality bandwidth from multiple backbone connections to work well).

I've heard from my clients that the technical support is also impersonal and not very good.

There are better deals out there on bandwidth, have a look around - check http://www.webhostingtalk.com for some appealing offers.

Thanks for replies everyone. I am looking at a few different companys to eventually rent a server form. To be honest, I wouldn't be using anywhere near the full 100mbit/s and quite a few reviews that I have seen for 1&1 have been ok for UK customers (customers in USA seem to have most problems). Suppose you get what you pay for.
Haven't 100% made my mind up yet, but you have helped

Thanks
