EU warns Iran

Time is running out for Iran to avoid UN sanctions over its nuclear policy, Europe's foreign policy chief says.
The UN Security Council has told Tehran to suspend enrichment, amid fears it is trying to build nuclear arms.
The EU's Javier Solana told the European Parliament that Iran had not done so, and must now decide if the time for talks "has come to an end."
Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ruled out ending enrichment and says its programme is for civilian use.
Mr Solana has had a number of meetings with Iran's top nuclear negotiator since Tehran refused a 31 August deadline from the UN to halt enrichment.
The US and key EU powers now say they will seek a fresh UN resolution imposing sanctions.
Mr Solana told parliament: "This dialogue I am maintaining cannot last forever.
"It is up to the Iranians now to decide whether this time has come to an end."

Even if the trade sanctions went into force, the Ayatollahs would starve the Iranians and blame it on us. The truth is that Iran could probably operate just fine for 20 years with the trade sanctions in place.

Finding the United States at odds with the UN and the EU doesn't disturb me much. I might even like it that way.

We should have stopped talking months ago and let the Israelis bomb this problem out of existence.

if it wasn't for the country's oil, Iran wouldn't be much of a problem anyway.

And for all talk about EU being soft bitches, i'd just like to point out that China has woved to protect Iran (in return for oil offcourse).

It doesn't matter. As long as Iran is able to sell its oil on the world market, U.S. sanctions mean little if anything. Even if Iran was unable to sell its oil (see def: snowballs chance in hell) the demand on the world market would remain. Prices would rise, we and everyone else would feel the pinch rather quickly. When some country couldn't get the oil it needed, guess who would be making under the table deals with the Iranians? I guess you could say, "They have us over a barrel".

Putting a significant portion of our vast resources into developing alternative energy sources is the only long term way out. If our national policy was to make Middle Eastern oil irrelavent instead of fattening the oil man's wallet the contuious Middle Eastern crisis could actually begin to dissipate.
