View Full Version : Live music in Second Life - How to?
1st April 2007, 15:45
So I'm very new to the idea of streaming music and need some help getting live music streamed into Second Life. I've searched, but didn't find enough to help get me started. I'm a musician that would really love to stream music onto the net, and Second Life is a great platform!
*I'd like to know what I need to do (a kind of step by step, if you will) to stream music into Second Life.
*Do I need to buy anything like equipment or software? Is it free to stream music over the internet? Any advice or tips?
Help please! Clueless musician in need of streaming! Thank you so much! Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

First you need to have a method in which to stream music.
Go here: http://shoutcast.com/download/
You will have to download the DSP to stream UP TO A SERVER
Either you create your own server on your own machine which will greatly limitedc by your upload bandwidth or you have to find you a server and pay for whatever you can afford.
go here to find servers: http://www.radiotoolbox.com/hosts/
After you have all that figured out then in Second Life you have to OWN land or know somebody that does so that you can put your stream url into the PARCEL Media options.
Oh and PS> Second Life Sucks and it's really not that great of a place to get your music exposed. YOur better off just creating your own webstie and exposing your music that way.
SL is full of a bunch of people with NO LIFE and they don't give a damn about your music. All they care about is having virtual sex with some fat brasilian man pretending to be a hot chick.

Myspace seems to have a bunch of independant musicians, so that might be some place to start.

or search on SL for streaming music, but you must use the google search engine (there's an option in the drop down box).
I see they do not support AAC+ audio. ANd also as stated above you must own land, which kind of kills an idea I had.

to stream into SL you will need
1) a stream you can try your computer via winamp or you can go to http://shoutcast.serverroom.us/ which has good prices for stream uses.
2) a broadcaster this would be the shoutcast plug in for winamp or you can download other programs i would suggest if you want professional sound you get a copy of sam3 or sam4.
3) to stream into SL you need to give your stream url to the land owner that owns the land you want to stream on.
music you can get via your CD or what not.
thats all there is to it. note though you can try making your computer a server for streaming but you may be only able to channel a 24kbs or a 64kbs connection which is pretty crapy quality.

Not true, it all depends on your upload rate. If you have enough upload, you can run many connections at 128kbps and be perfectly fine.
BTW, found out our college owns land... But no one is really very interested in putting our stream somewhere on that land. One more door shut:(
