View Full Version : Vista + Winamp + Creative ALchemy = Winamp on OpenAL (it works!)

I had a problem with sound when playing audio CD in Vista, both with Windows media player and winamp, sound distortion as soon as I try to do something else while playing the music.
I experienced the same in games too, and this is due to the loss of hardware accelerated DirectSound in Vista.

Cretiave Labs made ALchemy, which resolves the issue for some games by putting a replacement dsound.dll in the game folder, which redirects everything to OpenAL. Worked perfect for World of Warcraft, so I tought to try for winamp as well.

Winamp is not officially supported by ALchemy, so it wont appear in the ALchemy GUI, but it is a simple matter of copying the dsound.dll from the ALchemy folder to the winamp folder, and you can then hear the magic! My CD now sounds as it should without without all the crap from before!

ALchemy works for XFi sound cards, I don't know if it could work on other cards. Worth trying though: since its using OpenAL, it might work on other cards (but of course, Creative won't give any technical support for other cards)
