Basic question, don't see it mentionned anywhere. Assume Pro does not.
Looking for a good aac encoder. Realplayer skips all over the place from analog.
I wouldn't have more faith in Winamp's driver. When recording from CD winamp creates occasional clicks.

what do you mean with analog?

1) vinyl records or similar analog sources
2) cd unit connected via audio cable to motherboard (audio transferred via this cable (http://images.google.com/images?hl=it&q=cd+audio+cable&gbv=2&safe=off) in analog way and not via IDE cable in digital way)
3) other

Thanks flocksoft but I don't think your question matters. Does Winamp Pro convert from analog input?

with the right plugins, Winamp can record from Analog

Discussion on recording from analog (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=31003)
Discussion on where to get AAC output for Winamp (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=194467)

Truth be told, Winamp was designed as a media player, not a media recorder. Yes, it can be done, but it will always be a bit cumbersome.

There is better software out there that is better at recording

Thanks Rellik. Without doing all the research on that aac output plugin right now, which looks like it could be hard, I take it all this analog input recording can be done with the free full Winamp.

It can with some extra plugins, but honestly, it is so the wrong tool for the job. Might I recommend a program such as Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

It took me a while to get thru all those dll issues, but I got the out_aac plugin working. It can convert other digital files to aac but nothing happens recording from analog linein. No file formed.
...linein, "play" to record, configure plugin output folder...
WA is getting the sound.
Are you sure it can convert analog?

You are better off using some other program to record analog input to WAV, and then use the Winamp Transcoder ("Format Converter") to convert to your format of choice.

"Better off" is one thing. I take it that means out_aac just can't do it.
My tendency is to avoid conversions.
Anyway, there's not much choice in aac recorders. Do I want to buy Quicktime? I'm leaning to Mp3Pro these days (UnlimitedMp3Pro), but will limp along with Realplayer for aac.

Um.....I think "avoiding conversions" is impossible if you want to start from an analog source and play it on a digital device like a computer. And it's certainly impossible if you want to end up with something lossy like AAC.

The only distinction is do you convert manually or on-the-fly?

As many have already suggested in this thread, I think you'll be much happier with the results if you use a different tool for the task. At least the process will be more straightforward.

Thanks, but "better off", or that out_aac simply doesn't do it? You all still keep hinting that it can.
