Hello.
Recently the station manager of the radio station I work for asked me to help implement live streaming from the station's website. I have a good budget to work with and need some advice on how to approach.

We have a server that is connected to a T1. There an analog output that carries the station's live signal and this wire can be hooked into the server and play through the computer speakers.

What I imagined us needing is some kinda analog to digital converter/sound card that allows an app(Shoutcast?) to serve the signal to the users.

Is this correct?

Also I know that the song id information cannot transfer over because the audio signal carries no additional information, but maybe there is some additional program that recognizes the song and artists through some analytical process like those newer cell phones can do. But still if this song ID feature this is too complicated or impossible it can be left out.

you do not need no converters if the pc can hear the sound and all you need is the shoutcast dsp and a server to play to.

it should all work in soundcard mode.
this tutorial should help.

As far as the song id there is nothing really available for analytics if your content and you would need to do this manually with some form of script but i imagine it would be hard to do,

you also need to be sure that you are covered with your license to broadcast over then internet.

The license for a FM/AM station does not cover your Internet stream !!

trust me i work for an AM station and we had to take care of another license before starting our internet stream.

why do you say this?

Also, what would be the listener limit through a T1 connection. Would you guys reccomend outsourceing a shoutcast server? They do this?

If I do this will I need an instreamer such as this pretty piece?

Its always worth remembering that Upload / Bitrate = Max Users

you can get your upstream here http://www.speedtest.net

if you need to look into stream hosting you can find a list of hosts here

http://www.radiotoolbox.com/hosts

you can stream your station with an audio input to any of the encoders used for shoutcast on your station pc.
