Hello,
I would like to suggest you do 'Check for update' thing in player, like skype have... It would be great to check if newer version exist from player. It could be in Help context menu.

Prefs -> General Prefs -> Tick 'Check for new versions of Winamp at startup.'

I know this one, but i have never seen an update message, even i had earler version.. So i suggest to do update manager like Skype, it's good, beacause you can check for an update when you want, on Winamp can't do that...

What about your internet connection setting towards the top in the same Prefs page... Make it 'always connected'. I remember this feature to be working although I've disabled this new version check.

Good Idea. I've never seen any update message of Winamp, too. Not in older versions and not with any kind of internet connection (dial-up, dsl, cable).

you could always type "www.winamp.com" into your favorite browser and see if there is an update. seems to me this would be just as easy as navigating through the prefs. to press a button.

What about automatically checking every couple days? Seems useful for people who never turn their computer off and leave winamp running at all times.

Winamp updates don't come every few days... There is at least a month between two releases (that too if its an important patch).

Well, yeah, but what If your connection was down one day for some reason and Winamp looked for an update and didn't find one. Have Winamp wait a month before checking again?

Checking updates doesn't hog a lot of bandwidth, so it's more practical to look every few days, IMO.

Winamp checks for new versions on every startup with that option enabled, but new updates are released after a long time... So if you have that option enabled and wish to check for a new version, simply restart Winamp.

I'm pretty sure I'm not alone on this one, I simply forget to check for updates. I still think it would be easier for Winamp to check every few days, like all sorts of other programs out there.
