View Full Version : New version too bulky

Hello, does anyone else think the new WinAmp is just too big? This is first time in at least 10 years that I uninstalled the new version and went back to an older one, 5.094 lite.
Maybe I'm the only one, but all I want is a slim, easily resizable mp3 player. Unobtrusive. The new Winamp Dashboard (TM) is anything but, and I can't seem to drag the playlist window downwards anymore? What is going on these days?
It's feels like it's trying to be too much. I'm all for options but, I want them to be optional. I can't seem to get an extended playlist w/o activating some embedded web-browser thing...
Maybe someone has some tips, I'm not against getting a new version, this one is just competing for too much screenspace in my hands. I've checked the options, but without much luck. FOr now I am much happier with version 5.094 (x86).
Actually I think my real complaint here is that 5.094 now spams an ungainly dialog box commanding you to upgrade. Is there way to turn that off, because I'm not upgrading to the new version until I see something that is less bloat-ware laden.

It all your fault because you just installed everything. READ ME: If you blindly clicked next while installing Winamp (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=280693).
Dashboard - optional
Bento skin - optional
Upgrade notification - can be disabled in Winamp Prefs.
The lite version is still available.

If you don't want the dashboard, you shouldn't have chosen it in the installer. Plus, you aren't required to use the new Bento skin either, the other ones are still there.

I agree. Having all this extra stuff is a classic tactic used by bloatware to get novice users to install things they don't need. I've used Winamp for years because I didn't want the bloatware other software is providing, specifically see REAL player and ITunes. It saddens me to see this on the latest install, make winamp default search engine, winamp toolbar??? I don't want that stuff I want a nice sleek mp3 player that's it. Its cool you are offering these extras to people that want them but including them in the install and having them selected as default is just lame.

You do know how to work a check box, right?
And the Lite version is still even on the download page

Seriously lite version inst really lite and I use it.
Lite version should be player only.
NO Dashboard
NO Remote media
NO online services
NO Podcast anything
NO rip and burn
NO visualization
NO Browser
No internet anything
Winamp is my favorite music player but its stuffed with so much extra stuff now I get x amount of lag and x amount more crashes now. ><

The Lite version doesn't have any of that. It has the built in mini-visualizations, but that has been there since 0.X. And there is streaming audio support, not allowing that is just silly. If the version you downloaded has the Media Library, Online Services, Rip and Burn, etc... then you didn't download the Lite version. And if you downloaded the wrong version and installed options you don't what, then you didn't pay attention to the installer options (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=199851#list) anyways.

too bad theres no option for modern skin support. So, if you want Lite with modern skin support, then don't download/install the Lite version at all. Instead, download the Full version and you can make it exactly like Lite, but with modern skin support by UNchecking the things you do not want in the very configurable installer options (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?postid=1522843#post1522843). Just make sure that you leave modern skin support checked.
Read more about that and also how to eliminate all ads (if you want to) in my reply in this other thread (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?postid=2323523#post2323523).
