Hi there. Is it possible to stream to large audiences (mulitcast) and only input (unicast) the one stream?
Ultimately I am trying to set up a radio station to accommodate maybe 100's of listeners and subscribers. What do you suggest?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. (please email me) simonstribling@hotmail.com
Cheers

Simon,
Currently SHOUTcast and most other internet streaming media does not completely support multicast protocols. Streaming to a lot of people, for now anyway, requires a large chunk of bandwidth.

Heh,
Well, I have a huge chunk of bandwidth, streaming on a 2800usermax 24K and also 128K,
Quality, live programming with presenters, with excellent 6-band digital processing, outstanding studios, but hardly anyone seems to listen! Booooo!
I suppose no-one likes U.K radio - What are we doing wrong? Wolf FM is automated, and Steve (Lucky guy - by the way, great sound there too!)has hundreds! Not fair.
END OF RANT!

This is a very common problem with a LOT of radio stations and the same comment keeps coming out, why are all "those guys" getting all the listeners. Well I have been at this for over 2 years now, have had my fair share of Genre's but guys, it takes a LOT of hard work to get users and keep them coming back. The station I currently run right now only averages about 10-18 listeners at any one given time during peak hours and it's been up for over three months. Why do listeners keep coming back.
1) Stream Stability - Does it stay up?
2) Genre - Are you giving the listeners what they want to hear?
3) Sound Quality - This is a HUGE issue with a number of listeners. Our station has made the extra expenditure to upgrade all of our equipment, put in a professional DJ Studio package and added Hardware Sound Components to give us the sound people come back to hear.
I never come in to this forum complaining that no one listens, I know it takes a lot of time to get up there. We just picked up 3 Corporate sponsors, not because we went knocking, but because people liked what we do, they e-mailed us, we agreed on terms, we signed and away we go. That's what dedication and hard work get's you!
It takes a lot of time, skill and energy to get anywhere remotely close to DI - DJ Ari, Wolf FM - Steve Wolf, Tag's Trance - Tag, DJ Lithium - DJ Lithium...... DI has the right stuff to do what he is doing, he knows the industry and is very technically inclined. Steve Wolf, is much the same way and has done a brilliant job on marketing Wolf FM.
I try not to discourage anyone from doing anything there heart desires, but until people either start getting serious about what they do, by ligitimate music and spend money on sound equipment, the market will be flooded by the radio stations, giving the market FAR too much to choose from. As it stand right now, there are over 48,000+ Internet Radio stations streaming right now! And only 20,000+ Listeners...Do the math
My suggestion to people would be to team up and merge radio stations. Offer each other your expertise, your sound equipment and most of all, you both are able to split the cost of equipment to give you great sound and a marketing budget.
Out station, VerveRadio.net, is brand new, but we have very talented people behind the station, Myself (DJ CoNfUsIoN), DJ Duffy, Cary, Cory and lot's more who are all very invloved with "the scene". We know what people want to hear, we have the money to market the station and we have the blessing of having three corporate sponsors. We also just picked up a radio station that is using our services to get there sound out to the net. It's all live, real DJ's spinning real vinyl. That's what makes us unique! I hope this gives you perhaps a really good insight as to what makes Radio stations successful, if you have any questions or would like to throw an idea by me, let me know, my door is always open. I hope this helps!
