View Full Version : here's a way to test your own stream

hi,

i've been reading quite a number of questions about how to test their own stream. here's the method i work, and it works brilliantly. i assume that you will have a copy of winamp, otherwise it'll be good to download one.

go to the directory where winamp (the player) is located and create a copy of it. run that second copy while you're broadcasting and connect to your stream.
note: u can bring the volume on your broadcast down to 0 so you can hear the actual stream.

i find this useful because my broadcast mp3s are at 128kbps/44khz/stereo, but i broadcast at 24/11/stereo.

as a side note to my other question (below), i'm pretty convinced my setup with my mic prevents me from using that DJ chat function. i have to reconfigure the plugin everytime, because when i can broadcast my voice, the music disappears, and vice versa. if anyone runs on a pentium class machine with windows98se and uses a sb live value, and can get it to work properly, please let me know how.

hope this has been of some help.
cheers!

oh goodness! i just read my post and it's such a mess. i hope you understand what i'm trying to say. basically, have a COPY (not SHORTCUT) of winamp running to connect to your broadcast stream. it'll create a copy of config/ini files too.

sorry for all the bad grammar, my mind thinks faster than i can type...and i'm thinking of many problems over here. look at the time of my post, add 12hours. 'nuff said.

i'm gonna kick myself soon. 3 posts in this thread, all mine.
the alternative option is to open winamp. options - preferences - options
select 'allow multiple instances'

I too have an SBLIVE Value and have to reconfigure the plugin all the time. It dims the music on my machine and I can talk but my listners can't hear the music when I stop. Conversly they can't here me talk if they CAN hear the music... any soloutions people?

I have tried to run two winamps. Runing the actual program is not a problem but I can't use the sound device b/c it is already in use. How do i get around that?

Basically, you need to do 3 things.

1) Under the options somewhere you have to turn on 'ALLOW MULTIPLE INSTANCES'

2) Goto Plugins and select the OUTPUT. Put the output on Null.

3) Load a another Winamp. Go back into preferences. Select Plugins and make sure that the output is on Directplay or whatever you usually use for output. (Ensure this is not your Shoutcast winamp.

Open your url and you should be good to go.

As for the person having the problems with the SBLive and such, I am having no problems with my setup and really did not need to do anything funky to it.

Poohba-

You need a soundcard like SB Live (or one of its variants) that allows you to play multiple WAV events. If you have SB Live and you still get the same error, check your SB setup and increase the number of simultaneous WAV events allowed.

I've been trying this method to test my stream, but it seems like my NULL plugin isn't working at all. There's nothing playing other than the stuff i said.

This may sound silly, but how do I connect to my own stream from the second copy of Winamp?

Also, how would I connect to the stream from another computer on the same LAN as the computer with the server?

Thanks

Theres acually an easier way than this.. Download the Null Output plugin, Run your stream using the NUll output plugin, And connect to your stream in Real Audio Player or Windows Media Player

If your looking for a good MP3 player to listen to your stream while WinAmp is streaming, try Ultraplayer. You can find it FREE at www.ultraplayer.com (http://www.ultraplayer.com)

Then, run Ultraplayer, click on the Playlist button. At the bottom you will see the word ADD. Click it, and it will give you some choices. Pick URL, then enter the IP to your stream. EX: 216.32.166.81:8096

Ultraplayer will then connect to your stream, allowing you to listen to what is being broadcasted from WinAmp.
