Hello! I am a long-time Winamp user but have just now ordered my first iPod (160 GB Classic 6th gen) because I never needed one until now. However, I have tried iTunes in the past and absolutely hated it (plus, I've seen it totally wreck the massive mp3 collections of two friends who let it control their music files).
My hope is to avoid the use of iTunes as much as possible if not completely. Over many years, I have lovingly and painstakingly named and tagged my mp3s by hand with Winamp (plus Mp3tag to embed cover art) and have them organized on my PC the way I want them organized and have no desire to let any unthinking program "accidentally" take over and obliterate my hard work.
So, my questions are (keeping in mind that my iPod is still in transit)...
#1. Do I have to have iTunes (at least at the start) to format, activate, register, and/or update firmware on my iPod?
#2. Will my iPod or Winamp have any problems during synchronization with long file names?
#3. When syncing with Winamp, will it place everything on the iPod in folders the way I have them on my computer, or will my collection appear on my iPod as just one long list of songs? If the latter, would it just then be better for my purposes to copy my mp3s to the iPod using Windows Explorer (and, if so on that, do they just go right onto the top level directory of the iPod or do they have to go into a certain folder)?
Thanks to anybody who takes the time to read these questions and think about helping out an iPod n00b, and I apologize if these have already been answered here and I just missed them in my search.
