Are you trying to have 2 winamp's open at once or are you trying to allow your computer to play 2 sound files (one with winamp and a program sound (i.e. mail notice) at the same time?

In your orginal post you seem to be refering to changing something in Winamp to allow this, do you remember doing something to Winamp (last time) to allow this or am I interperting it wrong?
If it was a Winamp change then try changing your output plugin to DirectSound,
Open Winamp
Press Ctrl + P
Click on "Output"
Click "Nullsoft DirectSound" then press close and reload the song.
it probably won't work but it is worth a shot.
If it was some change you made in your computer (non-Winamp) then your soundcard has to support it but since you've done it before it obviuosly does, I can't remember exactly where the setting is but it should be in the control panel somewhere (that's pretty vauge I know but it was a long time ago and I can't find it since I installed Win2000), also try looking on the site of your soundcard manufacturer they might have something about enabling it.
Anyone else have some knowledge on this subject that you would like to share?

Thanks so much for your help Tom. You do understand me right. I do have a different sound card now (awe64) but I seem to remember the setting being a winamp setting. I tryed your idea, and saw no change. Has anyone figured out how to let .wav files play behind winamp on a single sound card?
Thanks Again,
Drew

I have a SB Live! and I can hear wav's in the background while Winamp is running. Try this: Ctrl-P and then click on Output. Click on the Nullsoft Waveout plugin, then configure. Click on the top dropdown box and instead of using the recomended "Wave Mapper" select something that has to do with your soundcard. Mine says: "SB Live! 1020". Close Winamp and get back in and try it out. Please let me know if it works or not. (And try to take a crack at my question please!)

drew_31 (I don't know if you will get this but here it goes) for some strange reason I was looking through output plugins and guess what I found, I think it might be exactly what you are looking for. Check it out at: http://www.winamp.com/customize/detail.jhtml?componentId=12565
and hopefully you'll be set.

For your information.
Remember that there are two different possibilities to play simultaneously many sounds at the same time.
1/ Hardware allows it, like all recent soundcard.
2/ If HW doesn't allow it (like my old AWE32pnp, but good), MS Directsound is another solution (your CPU does the job of mixing sound before sending it to the sound card), but SW have to use directsound (like winamp).
Maybe this helps you, maybe not...
