no sound

whenever I start a track in winamp the balance is reset to one side only and I can't hear any thing. I have to go into my MASTER VOLUME to set onlt to have it default agian when a new track starts. Is it something wrong with my winamp or is it maybe the master volume or is it maybe the way I've set up my stereo. I've tried everthing I can think of. Please post any ideas you might have.

Is the "panning-bar" (the cursor at the right of the volume cursor) well in the middle position ?
Because at each track, Winamp resets vol/pan settings to its own settings, wether you modify vol/pan with standard Micro$oft mixer control.
