Local Media versus Playlist tracking

I would like to follow the currently playing track in the media library/local media window. However, when the next track comes on only the playlist reflects the change, while the local media view does nothing. Can I make both the playlist and the local media view track the currently played track? This is very frustrating..

Well, you can't. The Media Library (Local Media) has no knowledge of that is being played.
