View Full Version : Error Opening Midi File

I get the error "Error opening midi file" when I double-click on a midi file from Windows Explorer while winamp is already open. The only way I can get it to run is if I close winamp, and then double-clicking on the same file will open it in winamp and play.

This kind of rules out having any midi files in a playlist. I posted this same problem to the forum more than six months ago and never got an answer. I have seen many other people post this to the forum with no solution.

How can I double-click on a midi file and have winamp launch it while winamp is already open with another file? The midi files I am trying to play are not corrupted. I say again, the midi files I am trying to play are not corrupted. One more time: the midi file I am trying to play is not corrupted.

If there are any winamp forum assistants moderating the bulletin board, please respond if there is an answer to this. I have even upgraded to newer versions with no luck.

Thx,
Jim

P.S. The midi file is not corrupted.

I am having a similar problem (i.e., same "Error opening MIDI file" message box), after just installing Winamp (I have tried rebooting the system even), except that I can't even play a midi file thru Winamp by double-clicking when Winamp is closed. I can only play the file by using the "Open with ..." menu entry to open the file with Media Player (or dragging the file into an already open Media Player). I cannot get Winamp to play any of my midi files (which are NOT corrupted - they play just fine in Media Player). I do not consider this behaviour very user friendly <g>. MP3, WAV, and CD sources play just fine thru Winamp.

Another note about this ... I noticed that the entry for "MIDfile" in the Explorer "View/Folder Options/File Types" dialog still says that the file type opens with mplayer2.exe, but when I double-click (or select open from the menu) a ".mid" file, it attempts to open in Winamp (and fails, as mentioned).

Apparently there are a number of people experiencing this problem (from the postings I've seen). It would be nice if you could give this a bit of a priority (as it is [non-]functional, rather than cosmetic). Also, it would help if you could post a preogress reply, even if you haven't got a fix yet, to let us know you are working on it.

Please let me know if I can gather any more information for you (I am a software developer myself).

Thanks, Don Paul (a.k.a. Radagast the Brown)

Try DirectMusic plugin: http://www.geocities.com/pp_666/midi.htm
It should fix the problem. If not, report exactly what error messages do you see.
