I've got the same problem as well.I'm running windows 95 and when I try to run Wav. files in the winamp 2.62 the latest download, it says "Couldn't find destination format" Gee we could start a club ....Glen

mjmattson
6th May 2000, 08:11
Yeah we could, but I would rather not have to...Does *anyone* know what is going on with this error? It almost seems as if windows doesn't recognize the format (try right clicking on a file you want to play and selecting Properties and see what it says).

I certainly hope that an intstall didn't damage a windows codec...

Ive been having the same problem too,the strange thing is i downloaded about 20 wav files and some of them worked so im not quite sure whats going on.please if anyone knows how to fix this problem e mail me at... lynx_46@hotmail.com thanks alot.

Same here with the mp3's working from some sites but not others. I would have accepted that the site was the problem, but others with Winamp 2.62 where I work were able to download from that site and play them with no problem...please email me at mmattson@epicrealm.com if you can figure out the problem.

mjmattson

Sorry...I meant .wav files in my last post...not mp3's...

mjmattson

Does anyone have an idea as to what is causing this problem?

fmejiasf
9th May 2000, 01:15
Hello every one.

For some reason, now I can play the wav files. I did what mjmattson said. I select all the ~.was files, then write press Shift + Right click, then select PLAY IN WINAMP, and then magically my wav files were played on winamp.
Please try, I hope will work also for you.

Freddy.

I didn't exactly mean to do that, but if it worked for you...GREAT! One down....

I tried this, but it didn't work for me =(

I've got the same problem. I'm in win98 and
I'm pretty sure I've got the current mediaplayer. what's weird is that all the files are playable so long as I use mediaplayer and browse for the selected files. If I try using winamp (be it selecting the file directly or in a playlist) I'll get the error.

James2795
19th May 2000, 22:28
Have the very same problem! I'm on win98 and sounds like I've tried what everyone else already has. My e-mail is jfb2795@aol.com if someone can help me. I'll continue to look and if I find out I will come back and spread the word.

Same problem here.

Machine is Windows 2000
Winamp version is 2.6.2
Windows Media Player version is 6.4.09.1109

I can play the default wav's that come with w2k (i.e. chimes.wav, chord.wav). But when I d/l wavs I get the error everyone else is getting. In fact, when I open them with Sound Recorder it does not even give me the option to click the play button. Yet media player will play the wav file perfectly.

I think somebody's program stomped on some codec, but who?

I wish a winamp person would at least make a comment on this post chain.

TheSilence

well, moral of the story is NOT to use winamp for your wav files. Just use MediaPlayer...maybe someone already said that and i missed it though...? Why use winamp for wav's anyway? Your playlist just gets ruined as soon as you double click that wav file. Imagine working for an hour on a really cool playlist and you forget to save it and "oops", you just double clicked on a retarted sound of yours and awwwwww no more play list...lame.

TheSilence

Just to add to the previous reply...I too had your guys' problem when i installed the new version of winamp. Everything was all f***ed up until I downloaded the new version of MediaPlayer fro microsoft's website and installed it. Then my wav files were back to normal. Don't use winamp to play your wav's....bad bad evil stuff may happen.

That would be nice, except the problem isn't just with winamp. Even when I try to assign wavs to various tasks (under sounds in control panel) it cannot play them.

I´m having the same problem as you guys, but I´m getting the error message when trying to play my .mp3-files...?

It seems like the new version of Winamp has
got some serious bug...

Why does everyone at Winamp.com ignore this
problem???!?!
Maybe we should try another Mp3-player...
The staff at winamp.com doesn´t seem to be bothered by all our questions...

majicka
24th May 2000, 00:36
It has to do w/ the missing codec, once you install the new version of winamp, it screws up all MP3 layered wavs/media...i use a chat proggie called IRC and I use a player called TXPLAY..its screwed it up in there too..its a missing codec..trust me I ripped my hair out for 12 hrs until I figured it out. ICQ me if you need it.

I solved the problem by installing shareware Awave studio and converting all compressed (some say evil) .wav files. It takes some time, though... But hey, I'm Mr. Patience for a reason. When you have converted all your files (you REALLY need some space on your computer) you can play them on Winamp!
I hope it works for all of you too!

The true issue is though WHY does installing Winamp mess up all the other players other than Media Player? Windows didn't change...but some posts make is sound like Windows "realized" that one player was trying to "auto upgrade" and prevented all others from working?

What codec was damaged (at least give its name)? At least then we could tell MS support about it and see what they could do.

Some of us don't ICQ so could you post the fix here?

Also...WHY does NULLSOFT not respond here? Eventually we will be able to easily solve this.

Tony

Winamp doesn't care this is just a chat room.
They could care less. if they have a problem they fix it. If we have a problem they forget it.

25th May 2000, 14:22
Ummm.....

Are you guys using the DirectSound plugin? DirectSound is a bitch, it doesn't like "non-standard" wave files.

mjmattson
25th May 2000, 17:36
All I did was update Winamp to 2.62...I assume that what Winamp uses wouldn't affect Ultraplayer, Sonique, Real, etc. This is some system level problem...

DewDude
26th May 2000, 15:24
Yeah, it's a system problem because I upgraded to Winamp 2.62 on about 50 computers (work and school) and had no problems. Just make sure DirectSound plugin isn't being used, that thing is a bitch.

mjmattson
31st May 2000, 02:27
I have Winamp 2.62 on my Win98 machine with no problem, it's just when installed on NT 4.0 SP5 that it won't play wav's and generates that error. I just hope that *one* of the winamp developers get this problem so they realize how frustrating it is (that will definitely motivate them to find it). I know that it is hard to reproduce, but they need to get to the bottom of it.

In the meantime I just switched to media player...I'll try the next winamp release and see if it has been taken care of and "magically" fixed.

For those of you having problems with the Winamp not working on your computer, just find someone to send you the MPEG player, download it and unzip it, then your Winamp will work great. If you need MPEG email me.

This will solve the problems everyone seems to be having with getting Winamp to accept their wave files and play. My WinAmp hasn't worked since I downloaded it, then today, I got MPEG, downloaded it, opened it and bingo, WinAmp works great. Let me know if you need it. IBSwan@aol.com

I don't think this thread should be closed at all. The question still remains as to what happened (and is still happening with Winamp 2.64). I contacted MS tech support about this and they are very concerned about what is happening here. The MPEG codec installation exe that I used that fixed the problem (and Thank you for that) is not even for .wav files, it is for mp3's. The MS tech lead that is handling this case is wondering how that would have fixed a problem that was caused by an installation. His theory is that it forced all the codec's to re-register themselves, but is not yet sure. That MPEG exe is not even shipped with Win9x/NT only Win2000 so it's really a bandaid here.

The true question is what Nullsoft's product is doing to Windows on install. That is what needs to be addressed. I really don't want to install any futher versions of Winamp on my machine if things like this are going to happen and Nullsoft is going to take the "hand's off" approach like they have been doing. What will happen next?

This needs to be researched and ADDRESSED!

DJ Egg
13th June 2000, 03:53
mmmm . . . interesting . . .

I'm intrigued !

I'd really appreciate it if you could you let me know the outcome of the MS Tech inquiry.

I have my theories . . . but I'd rather choose the "5th" for now !
As you say, this IS quite a serious issue and it DOES need to be officially addressed !

Cheers -> Egg.

Microsoft said that as far as they could tell, the MPEG Layer-3 codec installer caused the codec's to re-register themselves with Windows. It appears that the Winamp install somehow caused the "loss" of the existing codec.

The files that I want to play are labeled as WAV, but they are really in WAV format with MP3 headers. Valid files if you have the codec to use. Seems that winamp 2.63 somehow "unregistered" the codec I needed.

I've got tired of reading your complains...
I have written a proggie called 'WinRipper' - it extracts sound from everything. I've just made it possible to convert MPEG layer 3 WAVs to normal MP3s so you can listen to them using Winamp without any lame external codecs.
Go get it at http://www.geocities.com/pp_666/ripper.htm
If something bad happens after converting these files, email me (use links on my web page).

Problem is not with me, Winamp went crazy after 2.62...blame Nullsoft. If they were removing support or changing how Winamp works they could have at least explained this. I'm happy that you do conversions. I don't want to have to do that and I shouldn't have to do that.

I know that Winamp is free and I do enjoy it, but somethings need to be either tested more extensively or debugged with a lot of people say that they can no longer play files with the application when a new version is released.

Sorry that those of us with the wav file problem irritate you...you could just ignore the posts...

FAO : mjmattson

Could you possibly post a link to a site where I can download one of these MP3-WAV files so I can test out a theory or two ?!?

Firstly, I want to check to see if I get the same problems . . . although, as I said earlier, WAV is still associated with MediaPlayer on my comp . . . and nearly all my audio tracks are MP3 / RealAudio / and various MODule Formats . . .

To me they sound like they're just newly formatted compressed waves, rather similar to the WMA concept.

RU sure that older versions of Winamp used to play the exact same files, or is it just a problem with the very latest WAV downloads ?
Like I said earlier, it's very possible that WinAmp doesn't support this "new" format !
Maybe, in time, they'll include a relevant plugin in future versions ?

Does Winamp [and all other programs] now play these files since you ran the MPEG Layer3 Codec installer ?

I really find it hard to believe that the installation of Winamp could have caused such problems, because all the included files go only in to the Winamp folder . . . it doesn't overwrite or place anything in the Windows System folder [which is where the MCI Codecs are situated].
What you are saying is that it is apparently overwriting codec related keys and strings in the Windows Registry . . . but MCI has plenty of backups in the Registry, all of which are quite easily retrievable !
However, I still find this hard to believe. Maybe this is a question that Justin alone can answer ??? Have you tried posting a thread in the Justin's YadaYada Forum ???
Have you noticed the entry in the 2.64 "What's New" text file . . . [Quote] "Justin can't code" !?! I wonder ?!?

Anyway, post me that link and keep in touch . . . and hopefully we'll finally get to the bottom of this once and for all !
Hopefully, I won't require any programs such as MPEG Player or WinRipper . . . we shall see !

Yup, I'm sure one helluva very determined kinda dude . . .

Just one more thing to say. Technically, these MPEG layer 3 WAVs are normal MP3s enclosed in all that RIFF crap. If llamas were less lazy, they could easily make their MP3 decoder plugin play these files. Now go annoy them.

Yes, CDex converts these files too.
Note that CDex menu command names are a bit confusing - all WAVs (including those huge ones) are RIFF files. I dunno why do they say RIFF-WAV to describe MPEG-layer 3 compressed WAVs.

We're all very very happy for you that it worked . . . yeeharr!
However, was it really essential to bring back to life a 6 month old thread, and then to post the same message 3 times? Besides, only the few people that are actually experiencing the mmsystem032 error are going to need the fix, and most of them have already responded over 6 months ago (if not in this thread above, then somewhere else on the forums).
Please don't post the same message again. Once was more than enough :D
