I'm up WAY to early on my furlough day at 6:30 AM, I can't play my favorite MMORPG during windows update, and this bloody update is gonna take FOREVER, and the forums are basically dead at this exact moment. :hang:
O.o! Nevermind, it just finished just as I hit the period button on the end of that last sentence.
Yippee!!!!!!!! :D
See you guys later...

All the time. I only do updates when I feel like it or I get tired of staring at that stupid yellow icon all the time. My computer is setup for manual updates. The stupid automatic updates are not fun when you're trying to game on fullscreen mode and it makes you lag causing you to kill everybody and loose the zone and everybody hates you. :hang:

so do updates after each gaming session? or don't allow them to start the way you did this time until the computer is more idle? or get a couple more cores, another ram stick or two, and a raid array? (ok that last one might be a bit pricey)

Like this (the screenshot is in Dutch but you'll figure it out), you'll only see a small icon in the systray - which means no downloads or installs until you allow your system to - which means no lags, which means a happy thinktink - unless of course you need to blame your losses on something other than your own gameplay ;)

That's exactly what I have setup, the little yellow icon in the task tray pops up whenever there's an update.
Actually, if I remember correctly, it had been only a month or three since I last did an update. I've never seen a list that long for just 90 days before. I was actually quite surprised at that long list. When I started the update I thought it was only going to be 3 or 4 items and thought "screw it, I'll take care of it now" not realizing there were that many. Because there was a new .NET framework install I figured it'd be better to install that on my one furlough day and get it done and over with instead of having to deal with it over the weekend where it could really cause havoc.

Usually after gaming sessions I'm wore out and don't wanna deal with anything except my face on a pillow. lol That's a good thing right? :o

Heh, usually after a gaming session I get mad at myself when I look at the clock.
The last version of .net is around 5 months old. Huge download for sure. Sorry you had to go through that. I hate when something takes the wind out of my sails.
You could schedule updates, but then you have to commit to leaving your computer on at that time, otherwise it happens when you first turn it on after that time, which I agree is a real drag.

I still run XP at work... I really like Win7 better.

XP at work here too, and Snow Leopard on the mac.
With XP, you can still get the indexed desktop search, but it's a separate add-on from Microsoft.
