We're pumped to finally be able to unveil a lot of what we've been working on this Summer, early Fall. Read the official announcemen (http://blog.winamp.com/2010/10/20/winamp-for-android-now-in-beta)t for more deets.

We have a bunch of additional features we're planning to add when we come out of Beta (e.g. SHOUTcast Radio) and we'll be expanding this forum to get all your suggestions/feedback.

Be sure you're using Winamp 5.63 (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=345684) for the sync support features as well.

Get our Winamp for Android on!

First off, thanks so much for giving Android a proper music player.

There are some things I would like to see happen (if possible):

1) I really enjoy the crossfade feature in Winamp. Will it be coming to the Android version?

2) While listening to music, when a text or email is received, the song cuts out to play the notification sound. Other apps, like CardioTrainer, allow the notification sound to play on top of the song (the song is just dampened a little). That would also be a great feature.

On a great note, I am so very happy that Winamp will play right after a call has ended. For some reason, the Android music player and other music apps do not do that any more. Great work!

I look forward to the finished product! :D

I'm loving it already!! One thing that I could definitely use would be a browser function within the app. I have a lot of my music organized by folders on my Droid 1 and it would be nice to play just the music in one folder. I know this can be accomplished using a playlist, but the folders are constantly changing.

This app has the potential to be the best media player on Android!! Keep it up :D

So frustrated with Unknown Artist. In Winamp all my tags are showing with no problems when I transfer to my Droid X most songs are showing as unknown artist. This may not be a winamp issue but hope someone can assist.

Love the Winamp android App!
Wifi syncing with Desktop is brilliant! -- great UI for managing device library!

Few issues though --

Win 7 clean, Winamp v5.59 build 3033 Beta
Nexus One, Android 2.2, Winamp 0.9.1 Beta

Issue 1. Unable to delete music files on device
- using desktop Winamp, using library, right-click a track on my device
- select "Remove from Device"
- Click OK when asked to Confirm
- Progress bar quickly completes
- Track is not removed, still in library, still on device

Issue 2. Manual deletes on Device do not register in Desktop Library
- Delete tracks from Device
- Winamp Desktop must be restarted to show changes to device

Issue 3. Wifi syncing tracks from Desktop to Device slow
- Sync Appears to be fast when Device Winamp is running foreground and Device screen is kept "awake"
- Sync Appears to slow when Device screen sleeps

Some things I've noticed on first use.

First of all, I love the layout. It's almost idiot proof and anyone can figure out how to use it.

Second, I love having the option to sync wirelessly.

However, I have some issues.

I can't seem to be able to sync "wired". I mount my SD card but Winamp doesn't detect my Nexus One.

Also, syncing puts my music in the root folder of the SD card.

I also can't seem to find an option to select which songs to sync (a la iTunes and Zune).

If the following settings/options were included, winamp would be perfect.

"Star/Unstar" to select songs for syncing.
Choose location of sync destination.

I love the Winamp app!

But there is a bug which makes Winamp unusable: When I create a playlist in the Winamp app with some music files and connect my Samsung I9000 to my PC as a mass storage, all the entries in the playlist are gone, more exactly they are replaced by the music files which are provided by the phone. I tried this several times and it happens no matter Winamp is running or not. My music files are stored on the external SD card.

My firmware version is 2.1-update1 I9000XXJM1.

I've seen the same thing, but only with a small percentage. I fixed these by editing the files in File Info in Winamp on the PC, forcing them to save the metadata again, and that seemed to do the trick.

Annoying though, some of the album art seems a bit mixed up - not too bothered about that though.

The only weird thing about it is:
Winamp?

Yeah. Winamp was the sole program that was missed when I switched to Ubuntu some years ago. And I would have paid for a Winamp for Linux, if that would have made one possible ;)

But I guess that there is one Linux-Winamp now, at least for the Android Linux. Not perfect, but at least a start ;)

Afaik, wired uses whatever is specified in the Advanced tab of options.

eg.

X:\Music\<Albumartist>\<Album>\<filename>
or
X:\Music\<Albumartist>\<Album>\# - <Title>
or whatever

Egg,

did you look at my link? the defaults on a new winamp install aren't what you have in your example:

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?p=2758603#post2758603

this means that winamp will make a mess of wired xfers out of the box on android.

also, on the winamp app for droid, artists is listed by artists, there is no setting or option that i can find to use "albumartists" instead.

if i go into albums, then the comp album is listed by a random artist on the comp, again as opposed to using the "album artist" tag. that is senseless.

i know you guys are still in beta, but i think it helps for me to report this stuff to you!

Is there still not a fix for the 'Not being able to answer calls when Control Headset is checked' problem? It's been a pretty major issue for almost 6 months now. Pretty much renders the program useless to me until there's a fix, had to go back to the stock player.

yea, i am totally loving winamp for google... my only bugbear is that embedded album art doesn't show up on the device (sony ericsson x10-MP) which is pretty annoying, learning to live with no album art but... it would be great if there was a fix for this problem. nice one!

but how do i save it as a fave station?

BUG:

egg, sorry to have to report this to you... but i have 3 streams of my station, all the same except the bitrates are different, (and the IPs of course)

i can NOT save each one as a separate fave in the winamp droid app. it overwrites the previous one. this isn't an issue in winamp, they make separate bookmarks with no help from me.

but in the droid app, i can only have one saved as a fave. the 3 streams overwrite each other, b/c i think they all share the same name (and they are the same station afterall)

noted? will be fixed?

sigh... Still no aac+ streams listed in search, still no way to enter a stream URL manually, still no m3u (didn't test .pls but I bet it doesn't work either). Still recommending competitors for our streaming station so that droid users can listen.

Needed to edit because no shoutcast streams are working for me, just says "failed to play the requested stream" on all of the streams that I tried.

FYI I downloaded this from the market about 15 minutes ago so I assume it is the latest versions, think it said 1.1.1. Installed on my Archos 43it "tablet" running the latest firmware, Android 2.2.x)

I just downloaded the newest version of Winamp for my HTC Desire android, and the first thing I did was upgrading it to "pro".

I have an issue:

It doesn't play music. One could say this is a pretty big issue.
I pick a song but the bar (that shows where you are in the song) doesn't move. I have tried to pause/unpause and move it around the song, as well as trying several songs.
I have also tried to restart my phone.

I also tried the stock music player and that works just fine.

EDIT:

I just re-installed it and now it works.

EDITEDIT:

Ok, the problem is still there. I just tried to play songs from an album and nothing would play. Then I went to another album, played a song and went to the first album whilst that was playing, and now it worked.

Not sure about the second problem. We have, however, noticed a weird problem when upgrading from the prior version. On some phones, some of the old binaries are not removed and this is causing a problem. We can only reproduce it on one of the phones at the office - an EVO 4G - but there might be others. What phone do you have?

EDIT: I just tried two things and couldn't recreate the problem.

1: Letting one song from one album play, and just going from song to song in various albums whilst the last song played = worked fine.

2: Doing the same, but pausing before going to a new song = worked fine.

I will come back if I encounter it again.

I had the same problem - no playback after the update (just regular update, not pro). My phone: Xperia X8 (OS 2.1). Can't be expecting bill when I'm not even using the app, right?
Why can't closed apps stay closed?

I got 1.2 last night on my Nexus S (2.3.6), and all of a sudden, the android media player has become the default again, when I use my headphone button it starts the android app, not winamp anymore (though if I click play on the widget, the buttons will then start and stop songs)..

Kinda crappy, I was really excited about the equalizer. Not going to upgrade to pro with this sort of bug though.

I can also confirm that the latest update has essentially broken playback using Winamp on my phone.

When I first upgraded it couldn't play anything at all, as others have experienced, but once i reinstalled it will play files except continuously stuttering making listening impossible.

27th October 2011, 22:48
Since the upgrade it only plays ever other song. In fact, so dedicated is it to this idea that if it gets to the second to last song on a play list it will then jump ahead to the first essentially putting the list on repeat. The fact that a media player can't play songs back in order is crazy especially after I spent money to upgrade to Pro.

WiFi sync only works in one direction, from the mac to the android, but not from the android to the mac like it does on a pc. I want to sync my phone to my mac, not my mac to my phone. Also, winamp will not id the android if the charge cable is plugged into the phone. Add a menu item that says "Find phone" that forces winamp to look for a wireless connection. I want to "Know" it's looking for my phone rather than wondering why nothing is happening. Wireless sync on a pc is pretty tight, just implement that on the mac version.

The re-install fixed winamp not working at all, but now it is suffering from the stuttering others have described.
It plays the first track fine, then the second one is played in 1.5 second increments with 1.5 second pauses.
Not good at all.

Upgraded to 1.2.1, unfortunately no change in the button control behavior, I need to open winamp before it will take control of the headphone buttons. I've also noticed that if I stop it for longer than a few minutes it will "lose" the place it paused in, and restart at the beginning of the song (which isn't fun when you listen to 40+ minute DJ sets :D ), and of course it loses control of the headphone buttons as well..

I hope this will get addressed in 1.2.2

I concur with previous statement about the 1.5 second pause then 1.5 seconds of music repeated. Same issue on my LG Optimus S. Makes the app completely useless. 1.2.2 is here, and the same problems remain.

It's almost like winamp gets shut down if it's paused for more than a few minutes, the headphone buttons no longer control winamp, and it restarts songs at beginning instead of where they were paused..

Ditto to the crossfade suggestion... been looking at Android as a O/S for simple radio automation... Any thoughts in this regards?

Today I found further information regarding the stuttering music. It didn’t give me 20 minutes of good music today, The difference between when it did and didn’t was turning on Random. With Random off I got 20 minutes before it went bad. With Random on, it fails on the second track.

Einstein47
2nd November 2011, 22:51
I posted my findings in a different thread, but it looks like this is the main thread for "user testing". For me - it has to do with the text scrolling back and forth of the song title. If I have my phone landscape mode, I get normal playback. If I turn my phone profile, the playback stutters every time the text scrolling changes direction. As soon as I turn off the screen, the stuttering happens all the time.

I'll try the random / shuffle mode, and see if that makes a difference.

I seem to be having this issue now... Sometimes the app just stops playing music.
Winamp PRO 1.2.5
Samsung Galaxy G2, Model GT-I9100
Android version 2.3.5
Most songs stored on external SD Card, but this effects songs on the handset too.

Sometimes randomly through the day, or often after a song is paused, the app will stop playing. Pressing the play/pause key will switch the icon, but the app doesn't start playing and the progress bar doesn't move. Skipping to a new song doesn't help - the progress bar stays on 00:00 and nothing happens.

Like you, the only way to fix it is to restart the phone.

Additional information:
* Uninstalling and re-downloading does not help - the issue is still there
* You can trigger the bug 80% of the time by pausing a song and then skipping a song

I'm also having the same issue with 1.2.5 where Winamp just stops playing. For me it's easily reproducible by just switching from one album to the next. Start playing an album, it's OK ... pause the playback, go back to the "home" screen and select another artist/album and press 'play'. Says it's playing but no sound and no progress. You can press the pause/play and it changes the icon, but nothing really happens. The only way to re-start it is to 'kill' the app with the Task Manager.

This is on a Samsung Galaxy S II on Sprint (aka Epic Touch 4G). Hoping for a fix soon.

Thanks,

Rob

Killing with the task manager is lot less annoying than rebooting the phone! :)

That wasn't working for me because I was trying to exit winamp, so it wasn't in the task manager to kill! So, switch tasks and kill the winamp task DOES restore service.

I buy last week pro edition.

I like Winamp for Android, but one problem i have. I I'm listening 2hour trance sets. Then i put music to pause music stops. Later when i want continue listening music offen from the beginning.

When music is on pause short time, then music continues from the same place when i stops.

I have 1.2.7 version.

My phone is Samsung Galaxy Xcover, 2.3.6.

The file size 100Mb ->

I believe that v1.2.8 does now resume where a song leaves off when stopped but still is not the default player for my Bluetooth car stereo (Sony MEX-BT2600) when I start the music from its controls.

As long as we had to wait for this release I thought for sure this issue would have been resolved. So to say the least I'm disappointed. Prior to v1.2.x it worked. Oh well back to v1.1.1 (thanks for keeping this available).

My questions are:

Was this to be resolved with this release?
Can we have a list of fixes being worked on for 1.2.9 and is this on the list?

MrSinatra
18th December 2011, 18:38
good question!

i think it would be a really good idea for the devs to list known issues, and also indicate what priority those issues are being worked on, (one assumes all known issues are on the agenda), and what issues are meant to be resolved by what version. all this is done in winamp proper. (what ver history there is, is hard to read on the app)

i think users should be allowed to vote on known issues and influence the priority that way as well.

Wins and Losses. We have both
In December Last year I uninstalled winamp because the issues with it stopping play and stuttering were making it unusable as a music playing product. 2 weeks ago I thought I’d give it another run and installed 1.2.12.
I note that media button controls are able to pause and restart winamp (In this case simulated by Tasker scripts) So that is a big Win!!!
On the downside it is now regularly dropping the playlist while playing back. So after half an hour or so of play it just stops.
Now I don’t want to go back to my standard phone app because the random on it is Garbage, and winamp actually performs random properly. Add to this the 1X4 widget and you are on a winner (even if the lock screen is a bit clunky)
But non of this has any value if you can’t get the basic functionality of Load and reliably play music sorted.
I for one will purchase the Premium product when I can trust it will play. Please get this basic functionality sorted out.

Winamp For Android v1.3 Released (21 June 2012)
Anything you think needs adding?
Yes, PLEASE stop breaking bluetooth support with every major release...

We need:
- bluetooth controls that work when winamp is not front-most application.
- bluetooth streaming music that when re-connected, resumes playback from where it stopped when it got disconnected from the BT device.
- bluetooth controls that start winamp when the bt connection is (re-)connected, instead of the HTC-rom-based-so-i-can-not-remove music player.
- bluetooth controls that work when winamp is moved onto the SD card.
- winamp music that automatically mutes when google maps speaks (driving instructions).
- winamp music that automatically resumes playback after google maps spoken instructions are finished.
- winamp music that automatically mutes when a phone call is started.
- winamp music that automatically resumes when a phone call is ended.
- Separate volume controls for winamp music and Google maps voice.

I second that emotion... All the above would be very good and some even needed!

My winamp crashes all the time right now, I think its because my playque/playlist is to big.
Since I cant even start it now, it remembers last playlist/que.... So one wish more could be..

Crash discovery that gives the option to reset the playque/list or something like that.

Been using Winamp Pro on my HTC One S for some time now and I've especially liked the gapless playback. But the latest version (1.3.4) is now dropping a frame at the beginning of each track so that although play is without gaps it also skips a beat!

So far I've only tested it with AAC (mp4a) tracks but these worked flawlessly before. Anyone else having the same problem?

GetAmped

Is there *any* hope that WinAmp for Android will handle basic tags properly? My FLACs are all properly tagged, the tags display correctly in the PC version both in my local media and when I select the Nexus 7 tablet. But WinAmp on the tablet is completely clueless about the album, artist, title, track, genre and year even those tags are in the media files.

Well, these are the Winamp boards. That's why I am confused. When a new Winamp version comes out, DJ Egg is diligent in changing the thread titles and posting the changlog (I love reading the changlog for some reason) DrO is great with answering questions (even ones he doesn't need to address) And it seems that no one is manning this Android forum. The wifi sync thread has still not been "officially" addressed. (I have gotten it to work sparingly myself) That is what I meant for unusual for the Winamp Community.

Ah, I see. Yep, a bit strange in a way.

DrO
7th February 2013, 14:04
because it's basically different people doing it and there's a different focus on doing things. and usually Egg does update these threads as well (even if it's only the version title) but some things do slip through the net.

though as you're noticing, there isn't really a 'community' of android users as such on here and it's more about people complaining things don't work or complaining they're not getting a response.

that isn't ideal but i know when i've tried to jump in on things in here it's never gone well as people expect so much and i don't use WAFA (the most i've done is have a few builds in an Android emulator) so there isn't the same user / community knowledge about the product on the forums, which i think is one of the main differences.

DrO, That explains a great deal. Thank You for responding.

The WAFA app is really simple. You have music, it plays music. There are no tricks or hidden features really. But, its still new. I am sure some things will get fixed and updated as time goes on.

You are right, there isn't the same user / community knowledge about the product on these forums. That's basically because no one is getting answered in the first place, so no one knows anything.

DrO
7th February 2013, 14:19
but then as you say, it's simple so does it really need the knowledgeable forum users anyway. though is a different era compared to what things were like when the desktop first came out so i don't there is that same level of people interested in such things, at least not from a forum view point and seems more to be about getting instant gratification and demanding an immediate solution - i guess that's more due to the nature of mobile devices and how things have moved on in 15 years.

-daz

Juanus
7th February 2013, 14:33
You make an excellent point, actually. There really doesn't need to be knowledgeable forum users. Although it would be nice to have a definite solution to the wifi sync issues that are being posted in that thread. That would be 80% of the complaints people have I guess. It would be cool if you could just open a port in the router or something and that would ensure connection... like with torrents. I don't know, I just made that up.

I wasn't complaining to begin with. It was just an observation that nothing was being updated and no one was being answered. Maybe you can text the WAFA team and get a few answers.

Juanus
8th February 2013, 14:18
Unfortunately, we don't know what it fixes because there is no changelog.

I just found a bug in which when you wifi transfer a playlist to the device, the playlist on the device gets scrambled. So the order of the playlist you transferred is now different.

It would also be nice if you could have some sort options.

I just hope that someone is reading these boards and incorporating these suggestions.

TigerClaw
8th February 2013, 22:13
Yeah, I don't know why they haven't fixed this problem. When you manually add a shoutcast stream, Its supposed to show the Player screen with the ability to Add to Favorites. It just doesn't, It connects to the stream while still on the shoutcast section, Then you cant click on anything unless you exit.

In order to get that function back, I had to install version 1.3.8.

1.4.7 is the same as 1.4.5 = no changes.

Basically, we briefly released 1.4.6, found a few bugs/issues, took it down and put 1.4.7 (a rebuild of 1.4.5) in its place.

Once the bugs/issues are fixed, we'll push it out again... hopefully soon.

ps. The SHOUTcast "Add manually entered station to favorites" issue is fixed in 1.4.8

Hello,

Nexus 7 (JB 4.2.2) and Xperia J (JB 4.2.1) owner, I do have stuttering issues and sometimes the songs just stop playing without any reason. Pretty annoying but happens rarely. I would be more than happy to track those bugs and send some logs to you guys if you tell me how. Maybe a special DEV build?

Anyway here's one very annoying thing I can't stand on the notification bar controls, the cover is few pixels smaller than other JB icons on the notification bar. Also the Winamp icon could be an optiononal feature of that notification bar because on smaller screens it does not fit.

Nexus 7 screenshot with the cover photo pixel thing very visible:

I wonder if the fact that your device is rooted is a problem. I have the same phone but stock and it doesn't have any problems at all. I also have an S3 and no problems and I listen to podcasts on both of them constantly.

One other note. By bumping the minimum processor speed to 300MHz definitely worked for about an hour this morning without a single stutter. However, at one point the music completely stopped. Maybe the stutter and the stop are two completely separate bugs.

We've got various S2, S3, Note2, Nexus & Droid Razr models, a bunch of HTC models, and many more Android phones/tabs to test with, and we can't reproduce stuttering on any of them. We could reproduce the 'Playback stops at random' issue, and a few slight blips when entering/exiting the lockscreen...

The "Notification Bar Type => Basic" setting seems to alleviate the problem for most JB users, but not all.

We're still investigating.

All the reports for stuttering still occurring with 1.4.10 are from Samsung Galaxy S2/S3/Note2/Nexus7 users.

My hunch is a conflict with some other concurrently running app/widget/notification....
Maybe someone could post a list of running processes?

I've got an S3 i9300 (European UMTS/GSM), and I get stuttering both with stock and custom ROM.

I actually moved from stock ROM to Cyanogenmod 10.1 because I thought it was stock causing the stuttering.

Basic notification definitely helps but does not completely remove stuttering. I tried bumping up the minimum CPU speed from 200 to 400MHZ but that didn't do anything noticeable for me.

Just to help us understand why this stuttering has come about, what changed between 1.4.7 and 1.4.8 (I think that was the update that started all this)?

Process list attached.

Also I've noticede that when you just stop playing a song, Winamp disappears from the notification area after you move back from the app. That's normal. BUT after few minutes the freaking notification bar is always displayed as an advanced thing (with progress bar below) even though I am using the basic one (just controls for skiping tracks).

Those icons still drive me crazy.
