View Full Version : Control PC Winamp through my Android

When I play songs on my PC, connected via a separate DAC to my hifi, I open Winamp select a Genre, then select an album, then tracks within the album, then play.
I want to be able to do just that from my armchair using my android mobile connected via my home wifi setup; don't want to create playlists as the Genre/Album is in effect my playlists.
I don't want to stream the Winamp music back to my mobile; just use it as a remote control.
Can Winamp Remote or any other software do this?
(I asked this in the Remote Winamp forum and it was suggested I tried it here if the suggestions do not work; they all require creating playlists!)

AWESOME! finally found a Android Remote for Winamp!
I tested two and to share my opinion:
Playa Control for Winamp(R) by David Malzner https://market.android.com/details?id=com.david.playaControl
+ shows your rating of song and you can set/change it
+ can browse the Library
+ comes with a widget (but a very simple one: pause/Play and next Track)
+ "Server" is just a winamp Plugin (dll)
+ Free
- ugly GUI
- Album Art was not displayed on any Song (i have folder.jpg's in any Album Folder)
Lazik currently not available in the market (http://www.bypops.com http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14104607)
+ Nice GUI!
+ shows Album Art
+ can browse the Library (also shows Album Art there!!!)
+ can manage multiple Servers
+ "Server" is just a winamp Plugin (dll)
+ Free (theres also a Lazik+ with some xtra stuff avalible)
- does not display Song Ratings
- no widget
what i miss on both remotes: pause winamp when there is a incoming call
aWARemote for Winamp® by GeB Development https://market.android.com/details?id=de.gebdev.aWARemoteFree
i did now installed it, because you need to install a server software, i only want a winamp plugin. But it looks not bad.
Tested on my Samsung Galaxy S i9000 with Android 2.2.1

i paid for the aWARemote and it was well worth it. now has albumartist support and genre support. the reason it uses a systray app, (not really a "server") is because the systray app can actually start winamp from the phone. obviously a plugin can't do that.

Has there been any developments in regards to this? I'm actually totally and utterly confused as to why this isn't a part of the stock Android app?
MrSinatra

unrelated. one is a remote control, the other is an android player.

An app can't have multiple uses? Winamp for Android should be an extension of the Windows experience not a completely new thing loosely linked.

it is. you can sync your music with the current app.
if anything, they should do their own remote app, not try to jam it into the current player app.
just buy awar, its worth it.

In an ideal world, I'd have an app where I can take songs with my via WiFi, i can use as an extended speaker/radio and I can also control. I checked out aWAR but when I see things talking about enter your IP Address, it just makes me think of lazy coding.

i think the avg user would be too confused by one app that is both RC and player. jmo.
as to awar, trust me, its fine. its not lazy coding b/c the idea is that you could remote multiple computer's winamps via multiple IPs. its very easy to use and works well. try the free version if skeptical.

Have installed aWAR, it's doing a good job. What does it mean when it asks to download your media library? Is that just the track names or the whole files?
MrSinatra

basically, it copies the database of your PC winamp to its own DB on the phone. it doesn't copy the actual files. its a remote only, not a player.
the free one only does 400 or so entries, its just to demonstrate how the pro ver would work.

Hi..I'm new to the forum:) revisiting Winamp after a couple of years away, and trying to set things up so I can control my PC with my android phone.
I downloaded aWARemote but it only picks up 29 albums (it's always my Marillion and David Gilmour for some reason), despite me having many thousands! Is this the limit you refer to? I don't believe it mentions that on the android market description of the app. Will the paid for version lift that restriction?
Also, it only seems to display the album art for a few albums, despite all my albums being tagged (I assume correctly). Any idea why this is so? Thanks.

Did you get the pro version?

Hi.
No. I just got the free version to try. I can see now that it is indeed limited to 400 songs, so would need to get the pro version.
I have been trying it out though and although for the most part I like it there are a couple of limitations.
Firstly - as far as I can tell - when I am listening to a track, I can't tell what album it is. Just the Artist and Track Title are displayed above the artwork. Why not the Album Title too?
Second - and a real bummer - because I have in the last couple of years been using Itunes, most of the artwork is embedded in the files. For these files, the artwork does not display on the phone. For those files where the art is saved in the folder as a seperate jpeg, it does display. Is there an easy way to copy the embedded image and paste it into the thousands of folders I have?
Thanks

u could probably program www.mp3tag.de/en to extract the art from the first file in every album folder to make a folder.jpg but if you have more than one art per file in a folder, u'll have to pick just one.

Thanks. I have had a play around with mp3 Tag. Whilst I can do it manually, there is no obvious means of getting it to do it automatically for me.
Am I perhaps misinterpreting the situation? Am I right in thinking that the art image has to be saved as a separate file within the folder?

there are ways to automate actions in mp3tag, but i don't know how, might want to ask in their forums.
as to your diagnosis, i don't use embeds, but i suspect your're correct. still, thats something u can test on your own.
