Hi,

I recently got an iPhone and noticed to my big surprise that Winamp didn't support it.

I love Winamp and I can't (also don't wanna) go the iTunes road, since

1) HTC phone's are supported in Winamp (my wife has one)

2) Our entire music collection is in Flac (so I would need to convert it to ALAC and then miss out the possibilty to transfer music to the HTC phone.

The only choice I had was to switch to a third alternative... And I'm not really happy with that player, since it lacks some of the most essentiel "views" that Winamp offers.

Will Winamp ever support the iPhone?

iPhones have had support in Winamp developed for them on several occasions but then Apple actively blocks this by releasing firmware updates that break 3rd party software support. Apple makes you use iTunes with their products and likes to keep it that way.

I know. But I could be that it was a possible future feature in Winamp.

And how Can mediamonkey have iPhone support then?

because MediaMonkey isn't Winamp (with the fun of the Aol legal department, heh).

alas this is what you get with trying to use Apple hardware outside of what they want to do. MediaMonkey to my knowledge re-uses Apple dlls and some other funkiness which i don't think can really be included as part of Winamp (not without being stung badly).

Winamp's support was based on gtkpod though it sort of diverged from what they've since done so maybe it'll get merged back but it's not an easy job for anyone to get given to do.

alas all that can be said is to keep an eye for new versions and to check the changelog as something like that would be clearly stated if it was implemented.

Didn't know MediaMonkey had support! Sounds like if someone outside of Nullsoft wanted to do some work they could probably implement it in a similar fashion for Winamp, but that would be an awful lot of work.

ml_ipod is pretty sparsely updated, so I wouldn't expect it there, especially since the idea there was to develop support without using extra Apple libraries/processes.

http://mlipod.sourceforge.net/?page=changelog

BUT it does support iPhones and iTouches with up to 2.x of iOS.

As a sidenote, DrO, it looks like Abu finally accepted your patch!

yeah am already aware of the ml_ipod update. from my understanding, foo_dop (foobar2000's plug-in equivalent) uses a similar manner to what MediaMonkey uses though i'm sure it wouldn't be allowed within Winamp but nothing stopping someone making a plug-in which uses that style in addition to the format done before. however there just doesn't seem to be the interest from people to do plug-ins - is all want want want.
