Does Winamp have any way to connect to CDDB to take advantage of the CD information the site provides?
It sure does (these instructions are for the default CD plugin if you have the CD Reader plugin then these will not not work, just let me know if you have the CD Reader then I'll write some up for you.
Open Winamp
Press Ctrl + P
Click on "Input"
Double click on "Nullsoft CD/LineIN"
Make sure there is a check next to "Use CDDB"
Of course you have to be connected in order for this to work.
If it still doesn't work you might want to try setting this (not sure if it matters for CDDB though):
Open Winamp
Press Ctrl + P
Click "Setup"
Make sure the "Internet settings are right.
If that doesn't help wirte back.

Tom,
I have the CD reader plugin. Can you write something up about installing CBBD with this in? I think I have it working, but one problem is that it only loads the titles of the CD's when I click on a track, it doesn't automatically load the playlist of the CD up, even though I checked the "load" box in the setup menu. Thanks. Marvin
The CDDB support is wierd on the CD Reader plugin. This is directly from the authors site: ( http://www.url*****~copah/CDReader.htm ) Q: When I put in a disk it won't automatically contact the CDDB server and get the tags for the songs. Is there something that I can do to correct this, or are there any plans to correct this?
A: Instead of native CD player plugin, CD Reader has asyncronous CDDB data retrieval process. So, there is no need to wait all data to be retrieved before playing starts. Unfortunately, Winamp plugin API does not have 'refresh playlist' command. You need to stop playback and play it again every time you want to see actual track name. Or click Alt+3. Enable 'cdplayer.ini' support and when you insert CD later all track names will appear immediately.
If you can get it to get them names of the songs then it is working.

I've tried to configure CDDB using the above instructions, but when I try to connect I get: Error connecting to cddb.cddb.com:8880. Could this be a firewall issue??
Lurch if you are using the standard CD plugin then I would say it is a firewall issue if you are using the CD Reader plugin then you have to use cddb.cddb.com as the address fo it to work.

Does the Nullsoft CD/LineIn plug-in support firewall proxy?

If your firewall prevents browsing on port 8880, then you can't even choose another server, because you need to search on port 8880 to look for other servers!
Is there a way to configure the CDDB for use on port 80?

CDReader will work around a proxy server-style "firewall", I got it to work at Oracle HQ which is pretty heavy-duty.
Try CDReader v1.82 available from his website, the plug-in on WinAmp's web site is
older and didn't work right.
Use server cddb.cddb.com, no port. Hop it
works.

I've got the CDReader, still get "CDDB - Error, Connect failed".
I found \windows\cdplayer.ini file with body:
[CDDB]
ProxyPortExt1=CE62B5ED03
Does CDReader use this file? What does the content mean? How does CDReader know about proxy settings? It cannot be configured within the plug-in properties.

I have the same problem? is there any way to get it solved??
After installing the CD Reader plug in, i spent hours trying to overcome the "Error connecting to cddb.cddb.com" message. I finally created the cdplayer.ini file (which didn't exist on my computer) by manually titling a CD using the win98 CD player. After that, winamp CDDB worked!! - and poceeded to create it's own cdplayer.ini after i experimeted by deleting the file again. That's what worked for me, so im hoping it helps someone.
