View Full Version : Hollywood is junky...

OK I decided i would rant about something-
I have not seen a good movie is SUCH a long
time. I mean, X-men was entertaining,
Me myself and irene was somewhat entertaining, and so forth. But as far as
being deep and moving, it just isn't there.
Why is it so hard to make movies that are TRULY good? I am talking movies that use actual original creative forethought and planning and don't rely on what the focus group would like to see? For instance, the
"Klumps" took the funny parts from
the first one and just "magnified" them so
they took up the whole movie. I'm sure that's
what the focus group wanted......
Hollywood is for the most part a stagnant
pool of ideas with the very rare original
thought. I sincerely hope that as high
speed bandwidth becomes commonplace that the
"MP3 Revolution effect" spreads to small
movies that are actually better than most
"Blockbusters".
Movies that come to mind being truly inspired
.... of course the Matrix comes to mind,
and of course my personal fave Being John
Malcovich as well.... I personally thought
that the "Fifth Element" was great but a lot
of people didn't like the "French artsy feel" of the movie.
Anyone have any other ideas for "Original" movies that I could rent/buy... http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/wink.gif ?

I love the Matrix and the Fifth Element. Great choices. I also like the Terminator (1 and 2 are both good). Star Wars, of course. I like Independence Day, too. Mission: Impossible was kewl (1 made you think and 2 was all action, but still good). Entrapment is pretty spiffy.

Considering the Mission Impossible's, the first was great. Plot twists all over the place, dark and mysterious. The second, on the other hand, was, as you said, all action. My personal cheezy moment that I absolutely detest in MI:2 is where he walks past the flaming door and that white dove flies through. You feel like you're being beaten on the head by the message, "THIS IS THE GOOD GUY." But I talked with a few people, and they said they just love stuff like that. Whatever happened to subtlety? Don't get me wrong, it's a verry cool movie, and you should deffinitely see it, but Xerxes has it right -- is there anything original out there?

PhotoFX, the dove flying through the door
is a classic example of the technique of the director, John Woo. Another classic moment
displaying the technique was when the two
cars came together and started spinning in
conjunction. The camera goes in slow motion
and plays the spanish music- likening it
to the flamenco dance in the beginning.
I enjoyed the first one better, because the
the first time they did the face mask thing you were like "Cool" the second time it was like "Oooh Tricky" the third time it was like
"OK...." and the 4th time it was like
"Is this 'Face Off' or what?"
And of course at the end you have bullet
dodging a la Matrix.
See- once again
it all comes from the stagnant pool of ideas.
It sickens me http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/frown.gif

agreed. I think John Woo would make an absolutely fabulous assistant director, in charge of all the action scenes, but his plot and symbolism are either way too heavy, or nonexistent. There really wasn't much in the way of plot, for MI:2, it was all pretyt straightforward. You know what one of the worst movies, in terms of being so completely stupid, is, is moonraker. Do you know it was the second-highest grossing JB film of all time (at least priror to the current one) That is so sick. There is no coherent plot, no character development, some absoultely horible cheezy moments, and no connection between sceens. It's "look JB, we've found out where the bad guys are while you were away doing something else, now go there." So he does, and immediately a speedboat chase starts. WHERE DID THESE GUYS COME FROM? there is no plot development. Or where there is, it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference. It is just about the most boring movie I've ever seen. There's NOTHING there. NOTHING.

IJust rented something unusualy good last night called "Prospero's Books". It's a surreal telling of Shakespere's The Tempest starring Sir John Geilgood(sp?) as Prospero, in an adaptation that looks like a living breathing Hieronemous Bosch painting.
Other Good Movies:
Blue Velvet
The Lost Highway
Dead Alive
Clerks
Riget (The Kingdom)
Nosferatu, Phantom der Nacht

Xerxes, pal, don't go to the theatres in the summer. There's plenty of great movies out there, but they don't release what you're talking about in the Summer. That's time for loud noise and bright colors releases. The more meaningful movies come out in fall, closer to Academy award voting time.
BTW, Jayn, my fav movie of all time is Raising arizona. I've seen it dozens of times and it still just kills me. I still find myself and my pals, when entering a restaurant together, looking at each other and saying, "we're using code names," in a John Goodman voice.
Thanks for reminding me about that movie.
