View Full Version : Driving Music?

Hi, post-a-fever today..tsk tsk..still half a sleep though..(yawn..)..

Now yeah music... (and this is the bitch part..) the radio in Maine sucks so bad! I have never in my life had the misfortune to listen to such a narrow-minded collection of samey samey lets not upset Mainey type crap..Urgh...

So and this is where you lot come in... I need suggestions for good wilderness, open highway type driving music to rip and burn.

So far my first mix revolves around Camina Burana and Moby, with NIN, Switchblade Symphony, Astralasia, Enigma, Chemical Brothers, Biosphere, Lords of Acid etc taking up the slack between.

I should say that pretty much anything goes, from deepest darkest obscure German Industrial to light and airy mainstream ambient...

Eagerly awaiting some interesting suggestions....

Mule
(going to go do the wake up thing now...)

Ooh, you have good taste in music, too!
I kinda like listening to Sister Machine Gun whenever my dad brings home something like a Camaro or a Corvette from work. White Zombie, Clutch, old Butthole Surfers, and some Ministry should work well. I suspect that Massive Attack, Portishead, and Radio Iodine would also be good for driving. Check the techno thread in this forum for some techno recommendations.
Do you have a good subwoofer? A fast car? Speeding tendencies? Do you drive mainly on straight or winding roads? Short or long distances? At night or during the day? Got a radar detector? I think these all affect which music would be best.

Heh,

if you could only see our little clunker http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif We are driving a little 84 Honda Civic with the crapest little (loud though) sound system. My wife does most of the driving as I am crap http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/frown.gif but we tend to fly around dark roads in the dead of night on some nonsensical journey for mystical "undiscovered" eating establishments.

Hey! a man of good music! and I thought everyone over here was just into Godsmack and Diddly oh whatever... http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ministry yeah I can dig that, would go well with some Electric Hellfire Club, Skinny Puppy that type of thing. A good grrr mix! I must say the only recent song I have liked in any way is Lava. I'm more of an old school Ministry type pep... I must admit, I've not heard any Sister Machine Gun or Clutch... Have to go have a look for some now..yay new stuff!

Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky... I might end up speeding into oncoming trafic as the cloying dark cloud of misery envelops me. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif Okay only Portishead are miserable but hell that would be one cold mix. I would have to liven it up with some Ultramarine or something (who by the way are almost impossible to find on Napster!)

Yay!! Yay!! See now I've got some ideas in my head I can go away and start to formulate something..heh..

Hi Mule!
I don't know about a Honda Civic, but I know sittin' in the seat of a Mazda RX7 or a Mitsubishi Eclipse, (let's not mention speeding tendencies http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/wink.gif )....the all-time, ultimate, sunny summer day, open highway cruisin' song is Joe Satriani - Summer Song. I know it doesn't really fit with the rest of your tunes, but.....it works!

Hey you are just out to show up my complete car ignorance arn't you??? I have no idea what a Mazda RX7 or a Mitsubishi Eclipse is.. but I am assuming from the names that they are a teeny bit spiffier than my little Honda http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif

They are Mule, but I don't opt for imports that much (unless it's a Lamborghini or something of that nature)...you don't wanna hear my horrible taste in music, but all your music would sound oh so better in a Camaro (chevy all the way baby http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ) , preferrably 68 or 69, with a 454, five speed on the floor, a nice posi (sp?) rear...a slight cam, nice custom paintjob...like a metallic blue with black smoked in around the body lines....slap some slicks on that baby, and well, i guess it would only be good for quarter miles then...but you would need to get a kick ass system to hear your music over the engine.. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif hmm.i think i'm a bit off topic here..oh well..just ignore me like everyone else does around here lol http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm afraid I'm the ultimate in car ignorance Mule...I don't know anything about them (although I did help scrape gaskets once when an old bf was changing engines...ewww http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/wink.gif ). But try the song....it's......perky! http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

SLK is right.....1/4 mile is all you need if you're drag racin'. My old bf had a 64 (I think it was a 64) Chevelle Super Sport, with a 454, cute little hood scoop, fender flares, racing slicks, bright red with black details....I loved driving that car!

My suggestion for driving music is Porcupine trees album signify. This is a great album for long stretches of road.

SLK you might as well have said that in Higher Ardvarkian Brain Speak for all the sense it made to me http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/frown.gif And Jayn, "hood scoop, fender flares" ??? Your feigned ignorance whilst obviously well meaning was obviously a scurrelous lie..and yeah I can't spell either..

I tell you what I'll just nod my head and agree with everyone... Mmmm... I goes from A and then suddenly as if by magic I'm at point B. If for some reason point B fails to materialise then I go back to point A and deem point B to have been a pointless excursion anyway...

Oh and a final word, SLK, your taste in music? Why so horrible? It's proberly either really heavy hardcore grrr rock type stuff or perhaps maybe a secret Nsync fetish?

Mule
(going ot go look for Joe Satriani..need perky need perky.....)

"Porcupine trees"? Ooh more new stuff to go look for... heh have to remove my shares for tonight me thinks...must have more bandwidth!!! The only thing more annoying than waking up in the morning to see "Timed Out" repeated 12 times down the screen is to see "I've just vaporised the World and all it's inhabitants whilst you slept. You're in my nice new shiny Alien circus exhibit, hey have you bet Bubba yet?"

Oops, forgot to specify albums:
Every album I've heard by Sister Machine Gun kicks ass, but for driving I think the best one is "Metropolis." (Note that each album has had a little less edge to it than the last.)
For Clutch, I'd say start with "Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes, and Undeniable Truths."
Sounds like you already know which Ministry you like, but I'll still mention this: I don't have much by them, but I think I'd suggest getting the one with the Greek letters in the title (seems to be listed as Psalm 69).

Oh, and by the way, SLK does have good taste in music, as she seems to be a bit obsessed with Tool and A Perfect Circle.

Most of the stuff that I like to listen to while I'm driving is Hard Trance music. No vocals, great beats, awesome highs. You can find this kind of music all over MP3.com, too. I've heard a little of Sister Machine Gun, and that's pretty kewl. Rob Zombie has some great stuff to listen to whilst speedin... er, driving. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Dragula comes to mind. For some reason, I really like to listen to Stupify, too. This is the only song I've heard by Disturbed, so I don't know if I like the rest of their stuff. Guess I'll have to find some more of it. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Btw, Slk, I think that the first gen Camaros only came with four-speed trannies in them. And Mule, I've copyrighted 'spiffy' and all the likenesses thereof, which includes but is not limited to spifftacular, spifferiffic, spifforizing, spiffalicious, etc... I'll let it slide this time. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/wink.gif Oh, and Jayn, you'll like this (maybe http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif ). My sister's boyfriend had a '70 Chevelle. It had a 396 big block in it that he hard-mounted to the frame. It vibrated so much that his girlfriend (at the time) actually had an orgasm from just sitting in it. He said that he did this to improve off-the-line acceleration, but I think we know the real reasons. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/wink.gif http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Heh http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Everytime I see that gone in 60 seconds trailer I want to run out of the cinema screaming....aaarghhhh... I have not seen the film and neer do I ever want to...Urgh! I mean Wild At Heart - Gone in 60 Seconds - Wild at Heart..Gone in....see? Of course I have not heard the soundtrack so I'll juat have to go and investigate that now won't I http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thankyou Winsane for the album titles, I shall be going a hunting soon enough! Yeah Psalm 69 is a pretty fine Ministry Album! I just love those syth pop sounds and that grinding gnarling rythm. No mix is complete without Revolting Cocks cover of "Do you Think I'm Sexy"! That just is such a good stompy stompy type club song...good for blaring out of windows...whilst looking really really really grungy and grrrrr! heh

I'm sure SLK has a marvelous collection of mystical madness (you do obviously or else you would not be so interesting a person!). Tool, yeah can dig that. I have pretty much anything in mine...it's all about moods not cliche pigeon holes.. For example as I write this I am listening to Paul Dresher - Mirrors which will be followed by AON - Camilla and then whatnot.. My alarm call for tomorrow is set for Pixies - Subaculta. So what group does that shuffle me into?

Bed time for me now though, been a nice quiet Friday...all the good clubs are Monday/Thursday..pooh..oh well (yawn) "come weet slumber and surround me with your velvet cloak"

Mule.

No, seriously. I did this in a thread a couple weeks back. It was just before you came to the forums, I think. Everyone else saw it. Reverend Ike told me that there were some unregistered people running around here with screennames with 'spiffy' in them, too. Ah, fuggit. I don't care anymore. Spiff all you want. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/mad.gif

Fugg, I need to rant here for a minute.
OK "carhead wannabe's", driving music? MY ASS!
If you were really into cars, you know that there is NO music sweeter than the sound of properly piped header flow of a 454 and the turbopropish sound of a 6-71 toppin her off!!!! http://www.geocities.com/elchevelle_2000/ElChevelle.gif
