(sound of wrists being slit)
Shit. Just yesterday I was getting 4.someodd kbps and now all I get is a fucked up 1k. Lucky bastards in the US. Not only do I have an iffy internet connection, but it costs 30 bucks... PER LINE (and we have 2) in chile. Hey, you know, it almost sounds like AOL...

That's absolutely pitiful
Are you sure it's isp side, the phone company, or your machine?

People could be steeling your bandwidth. Track them down and kill them, then break there computers. You'll fix you problem that way :-) If not it will just be fun.

Have you tried a "Trace Route" to see if their are any obvious bottlenecks?
How about your line gain. Are voice calls sounding clear enough or is there some distortion? It could be a short in the exchange.
Have you tried a different ISP, i.e. a free one (do they have them over there?). I always keep a copy of Freelane or something lying about just in case. I can put up with the adverts for a short while until my defualt gets fixed.
Have you altered your modem registry settings recently, i.e. your MTU, TTL etc?
It's a pain in the hiney isn't it. When I was in Scotland, we used to have some pretty crap ISP's with some pretty dire service all round. Now that I'm in the states I find out that it's pretty much the same. Why do all ISP's feel that you just have to have some propriety dialling software and browser customations. Sheeesh, all I want from an ISP are some DUN, POP3 & NEWS settings that I can plug in myself.
My advice if you are technically minded and somewhat of a neferious person is to go out and either make or purchase a box for your phone. Blue, Brown, Black...etc I have never used one so can't really comment on their effectivness but I surmise that they could be pretty fun as long as you knew exactly what sort of exchange your lines come from, and you don't mind a bit of soldering.
Mule.

I don't want to make you feel even worse but... (there's always a but) ... I get around 80kb/sec if I download from T1 or T3

Thanks a lot for the 80k info. Since my wrist slitting thing didn't work, I'll just stick a fork in one of the 220 sockets here and see what happens...
Jayn, sorry about the blood. I'll clean up the floor.
RM, I'm thoroughly insulted that you think it would even be a REMOTE possibility that my comp. could be a problem. My computer is hurt. Apologize to it.
How do you steal bandwidth? Maybe I should learn down here http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif. I may just track down and kill some random people, just to make me feel better about my net connection. Then I'd SELL their computers. HAHAHAHAHAHA!
WHAT THE FUCK IS A 'TRACE ROUTE'?
Voice calls are fine.
I live in a 3rd world country, what do you think? Free internet doesn't exist down here.
I don't fuck around with MTU&TTL&SHIT like that. Doesn't work, anyways.
You are undoubtedly the 1st person I've heard use "hiney" in a forum post. Congrats.
I'm not THAT technically-savvy. My hardware expertice ends at putting my comp together (that may change when I have to overclock a Duron proc.)
What's wierd it that it isn't ALWAYS shitty. Today it's 2k. Yesterday it was 1k. 2 days ago it was 4.somethin. It just really pisses me off when I can't download audiocatalyst b/c I keep getting cut off the server.
AND FINALLY, FUCK YOU BROADBAND PEOPLE! I HATE YOU! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! (although I aspire to become one, of course).

Don't we all? http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/frown.gif A 'trace route' is a command line entry that allows you to see where your information is going in between you and where it ends up. It shows all the computers and other devices that your information goes through before it gets to its destination and it shows how long it takes.

If it is not always bad then it is proberly either your phone line or your ISP.
Most ISP's buy far less lines than they have subscribed customers becuase they presume that not everyone will be online at the same time. Kind of like the flight overbookings you get into nowadays.
Are you definately using the correct number? Some ISP's have different numbers for different modem types, i.e. V90, K56 or X2 etc.
Then of course is the fact that their pipe into the net could be a piece of crap or their hardware could be really old and pathetic.
If your voice calls are fine then your line is maybe not at fault. But You might want to try asking your phone company to turn up the gain just to see if that helps. Most companies will do this after some persuasion.
One thing to try is a direct modem-to-modem connection with someone you know has a good modem and see what ping speed you get. If it is good then start clamouring at the door of your ISP, if it is bad then go shout at your phone company or seriously start looking at your computer for problems. Check your FIFO buffers, error correction, protocols, all that kind of guff.
Overclocking a Durcon? Heh that's a brave thing to do... My only real experience with overclocking was a dire failure so I have kept away from it since. I'd be interested to hear how you get on though.
Broadband...sigh.. yeah I know... I keep looking at the DSL packages offered by my tel co and wishing..wishing... but not enought cashoola just now... http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/frown.gif
Maybe WinAmp 3 should come with a free 2-way broadband satelite system for home users. Nullsoft are you listening? Just think of the user base you would get! Forget about the money, money is the root of all evil..think happy users!

"Grrr. My ISP's shit. I have a 56k modem but all I get are shitty 5k/sec download speeds. I'm really pissed off"
I never get tired of people saying this.
I know that was off topic, but I don't care.

I only get 3kbps download speeds on average. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/frown.gif I hardly ever connect faster than 26400.

I get about 5Kbps here in Italy, but I have to pay for every second that I am online.

£10 a month. Free calls. Average download speed of 3.3k/sec, I've had 5.2k/sec b4. Which was nice.

I recommend this to all us ISP dinosaurs:
The last time I moved residences, I called the phoney company almost immediatelly and complained that I had a staticy line when conversing with people on the telly. Though there wasn't a noticeably huge amount of interference, the customer service rep replied that I was coming in a bit scratchy and that a remedy would be sought. The very next day, my connection speed rose from a constant 24,600 bps to between 49,333 and 50,667 bps ever since. Hmmmm, whining shouldn't always be left to the likes of Ernest and Julio http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Mulefire

Exactly!
Most low speeds are the result of interference somewhere along the line, either by power cables, other phone cables or just long distances between repeaters.
In most cases a simple upping of gain will noticibly improve line quality and saves on putting in new lines or actually fixing the problem which is why phone companies will usually just do it on request.
Complain, complain and complain again! Even if you have to stick a large high voltage line next to your phone when you call http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Mule.

Win DUN says 46 667 - 48 000 but I can often hit up to 10kb. Out in the boondocks of New Brunswick, the most you can hope for is 3.6

Ouch...
On my 56k I average at 5.3Kb/s. Of course it goes without saying that any large file I might happen to want to download only wants to come at 0.5Kb/s..sigh. Oh well that is the price you pay for downloading unique large files of dubious origin http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif
And as this is a bitch forum let me just say that all these free disk space places really piss me off!!! Grrrrr.. Great idea but pathetic bandwidth limitations and utterly crap Java downloader applets with dynamic folder reassignment..Urgh!!! What happened to the good old days when you just added everything to a GoZilla filelist and let it run overnight..sheeesh. Getting severely tempted to start writing bots in AutoMate.
Actually evil idea springs to mind...let me see generate a word list, write a basic grammar rule parsor in VB script, add a random timer element, record the act of posting a message to the forum...heh heh... I think I've just given myself a new project - "How to get banned for Life". ahh the wonders of modern technology...
Hey this message could have been posted by my bot..see you don't know do you..is this me or just some mindless computer program (some would argue there is no difference but I say boo to them..) In fact as you are reading these words I could be vaporised in some freak accident....whilst my comp keeps on going...oooh.. I would take any of my future messages with a grain of salt, it's proberly not me...heh http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif
