Today NVidia and 3Dfx officially announced that NVidia is basically buying all of 3Dfx's primary technology and its patents. This means there are now only two major video card companies, NVidia and ATI. In the short-term, ATI can compete with NVidia with the GEforce vs. Radeon. However, if NVidia makes good use of 3Dfx's patents, they could potentially become the Microsoft of video cards. :(

ATi would probably do well teaming up with a couple of the smaller manufacturers, like S3. This would possibly increase their market, and would give them new weight in the market.

This is pretty much a damn monopoly on the high-end graphics card market. Oh well, at least I don't have to decide whether or not to get a 3dfx or an Nvidia...

Well, at least that will create a way to play Glide based games without a Voodoo card. I could finally play Unreal Tournament at a decent framerate on whatever video card I get cuz I don't have to use the really poorly written OpenGL and D3D drivers.
