View Full Version : Member List

I was just looking through the member list and noticed that there are at least 200 members that haven't even made one post , and about 300 more that didn't even make it out of junior member. There should be a so-called timeout date, like if you don't post for, say, 1 month, your account gets deleted.

It's just sort of weird because of all the people who register but never bother to post - and the new rule that you have to register to post is going to make that number go at least into the 500's becase people will just post one question and go away forever.

It's good that they had turned that function on (only registered users can post). That means that it will be a little harder for people who constantly spam the forums to come back after being banned. Sure they could just use Hotmail to create a new e-mail, but that's a little harder than going to a web site and choosing a proxy.

yep that does make sense

16th December 2000, 23:36
hell no!

i don't think this should happen.
during this chrimbo, i will be on this forum quite a lot. but after january 8th, i gotta go back to boarding school (it sux). unfortunately i will not be able to access the internet for over a month, and i don't want to keep on having to register my name.

not everyone is a regular. it might be a good idea to delete people if they don't send a post for like 4-5 months, but not one month.

i may be a junior member, but i shouldn't be regarded as different. sooner than you know it i'll be a senior, but for now a junior will have to do.

Mister Bill, the size (both its dimensions and particularly its file size) of that GIF in your sig are a bit large. I don't particularly mind, since I've got a fairly fast connection, but 118943 bytes is just too big for all the people with dial-up connections. Plus, if you ended up with a bunch of posts on one page, the animatedness of that GIF would slow my computer down to a crawl. So could you please find or make a small single-frame image of that little guy to replace the big one in your sig?

Matt
16th December 2000, 23:38
But posting just to ask a question can be annoying. I know I probably wouldn't bother.

There'll probably end up being thousands of registered users but only a few hundered regularly posting.

Winsane
16th December 2000, 23:42
As for the original topic: I think just one post on these forums should be enough to permanently reserve a name. Otherwise, there'd be some confusion if a new person registers an expired name and people assume the new person is the same as the old one. Besides, there's a very large number of possible permutations of the characters available to make user names from. I don't think we're about to run out.
But I might kinda like it if names with no posts whatsoever eventually expired. That way I could finally get "Winane" back.

16th December 2000, 23:44

Also, I think Watadoo should re-enable unregistered users to post, just as soon as TSGH is back online. In the meantime, this setup should help keep the forums from being completely flooded with repeat newbie questions. But after that, requiring registration is just too restrictive. A few people don't even have e-mail, so they'd be outta luck. And some people are too paranoid about submitting their e-mail address to register. Heck, I've made more posts on this forum than anybody else, but I probably wouldn't even be here if registration had been required to post anything when I first stopped by.

Does anyone know the post rate. Say like some number of post to become junior member, senior member, etc.

fish

1) don't even think about a shockwave thing ;)

2) it's:

0-30: junior
31-100: member
101-500: senior
501-infinity: major dude

who was techhead9?
(dare i ask, sounds bad)

Winsane
17th December 2000, 00:27
No, not any size. I figure it can be up to, say, 500 pixels wide, but vertically it should be as small as possible. Otherwise it increases the amount you have to scroll through each page, which is a minor pain.

My sig did not work as a .swf file. so i converted it to a gif. width X height is 360x48. Is it ok to use??

fish

I think it's ok. (w)insane- what do you think?

Winsane hates animated gifs in sigs. The dimensions are tolerable, though.

it's a bit harsh on the eyes, but go for it. i couldn't make something like that without a day or two spare.

Winsane
17th December 2000, 00:46
I'd appreciate it if you'd just take one frame of it and turn it into a non-animated GIF, but for now I can't really force you to change it.

Matt
17th December 2000, 01:57
Them two sigs are alright but not when you post numerous times in the same thread. Too much to look at, and with the new forum it's harder to see the actual post. Especially when the sigs are bigger.

piesupreme
17th December 2000, 02:03

what i will do now is use my sig once per page.

piesupreme
17th December 2000, 02:22
right. it isn't going to be annoying anymore, because i will do it extremely less often. secondly, i am a junior member trying to get myself recognised, alongside sorcerer13. so back off for a while. yes, i will calm down. but you don't get senior member or major dude by sitting on your arse doing nothing.

Matt
17th December 2000, 02:26
No but you can get there by posting useful and helpfull posts and not hundreds of worthless posts, which talk about your sig etc.

I'm not saying all your posts are useless :)

ok, i worked out what it meant but i wanna know if it is from the movie event horizon!

As a general rule, your signature should not be larger than your body of the message - a rule which sorcerer has broken
many times... The sig should not be so dominating that it
seems like the focus of the message because it dominates
the screen - your black box on a white background
makes it seemingly slarger and more distracting to the eye...

Sgtfuzzbubble's old sig was infamously distracting...as
any forum old-timer can tell you....

All this Sig talk makes me really horny for a Sig myself. I think I'll make a non eye distracting image that will fill your heart with delight and hope for a betterf tomarow :) Or I'll just whack off for an hour or two. That's a tough one. I'll have to think about it. :)
