Look. Let's just say that the Americans and the Brits are both as equally cool as each other okay?
Or people will get offended and fall out.
Wars really shouldn't be spoken about too much. Why won't everyone grow up and LIKE EACH OTHER?
Okay, we Brits may not let our hair down and go romping about as much as the Americans, but that doesn't mean to say that we suck, right? We Brits DO have feelings, you know.
Okay, we Brits might be too laid-back but that's just how we are.

NA was discovered by St. Brendan of Ireland, who sailed across the atlantic in a leather boat. Then, about 150 years later, Leif Ericsson the Red misjudged the distance to Greenland, and smashed into Newfieland, or Vinland as he called it (hmm... that's odd.. no wine in newfieland...).

For what it's worth, I live in England too, Leeds to be precise.

Devolution meant that Scotland is no longer ruled from Westminster (London); the Welsh are constantly lobbying for independence too, bless 'em (confirmation of any definite news anyone?); Northern Ireland is in constant chaos; all cool & decent Englishmen are anti government & queen; so therefore the UK is (un)officially "no more".
Britain was Great maybe when it owned two thirds of the world and the gates of its enemies (ooh, biblical), but with a most shameful history to boot. Now, it doesn't even own itself.

Today's real enemies (on a global scale) are: big business, ignorance, propaganda, industry & pollution . . . and in some countries' cases, a small minority of bigoted drunken football hooligans & holidaymakers who tarnish the overall national image, ahem :) (I'm sure we can all add more items to the list)

The stereotypical Englishman is a myth, unless you believe everything that Hollywood portrays. It might apply to the 1% of the population who own all the land & riches, but certainly not to the real people.

However, the population of the country includes people from all over the world of many different creeds & religions, and probably a fair few aliens too, making the "UK" a truly cosmopolitan place to be . . . a lot like these forums actually.

So, as the title of my post suggests, let's all get on together & try our best to make this God forsaken hellhole a better place.

Amen

The Egg.

damn straight. lets clear some things up, eh, what?

- Not every englishman talks like Patrick Stewart. or Dick Van Dykes lame interpretation; spoiled mary poppins for me, that did.
- There is no such thing as "U.S English. Microsoft will listen one day.
- Australian and english accents are different. its not THAT difficult.
-I have NO idea how this vicious rumour was started, but the english do not all have poor dental hygene/care
-American Football is a womens game. try rugby.
-Hugh Grant must die. lousy sellout.

kinda got off the point there......

Dr Satan
20th December 2000, 17:16
You missed one...

- All English people DO NOT work for Darth Vader.

If Americans can stop thinking these things are true then I'll stop thinking all Americans are fat and stupid :P

But perhaps we need to sort things out in our own country first. For starters, I'm from Carlisle. I'm not a Jordy, I'm not Scottish, I'm sure I'm not Irish. And since I'm a northener this does not knock 50 off my IQ. I'm a student, I don't work in the mines for anything daft like that.

Ahh that was fun. Next.

Does it piss anyone else off how in Friends they talk about a "British Accent" ? WTF is that? Anyone ever heard one?

Also, to everyone else who was unfortunate enough not to be born in the United Kingdom (joke), the typical Brit is nothing like Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and a Funeral. Normal Brits don't talk like that and the only time they find it that hard to put a sentence together is when they have been down the pub and got totally rat arsed (which to be fair happens quite a lot).

Finally, one thing that needs clarifying: the actual name of our country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. England, Wales and Scotland make up Great Britain.
[HaHa to everyone else - we managed to pull off putting "Great" in the name of our country. Ahhh for the good old days when the Brittania ruled the waves, lol.]

Hey guys.

just thought I'd let you know what I think:

1. Scotland and Wales want to leave England, that is fine with me we actually give them money to support there countries so if they want, they can fuck off.

2. England rules.

3. The weather here sucks.

4. England rules.

5. I am from Bristol, live in Bedfordshir(t)e and go to univeristy in Reading.

6. England Rules.

7. So does Carling Black Label.

8. So does Winamp.

9. So does England.

10. England (and it's empire) including America, have a lot of history. The only good thing that has really come from that is that english has become the language of the developed countries (means I don't have to learn any other). I think that we should ignore the differences and history and get on.

11. England rules.

12. Blame Canada (from South Park film)

13. Russia sucks (to cold)

14. In England we have enough problems with racism before we even leave the island, northerners, southerners, welsh, scots, english, west coast people, city people, country people, coloured (or not) people, religon (lets not go there!) and then you have politicans, hmm.

any way. England rules.

If you're konfuzed about whether GB / UK is a good place or not, here's a breakdown:
Northern Ireland: By and large, cool people - the biggest party animals I know come from here
Scotland: Pretty much a mixed bag - a whole spectrum of people. A very large proportion of stoners (from my experience, and yes, this is a good thing)
Wales:It rains a lot - I go to Uni here, and this last term, it literally rained every single day!!!!
SE England: All the money made elsewhere makes its way here. Government happens here. This part has the largest concentration of w*nkers in the known world
Rest of England: Much like everywhere else. Except Goole, which is actually an MI6 genetic project (how to make four genes go round a town of 20000)
Contentious, aye, but so true (ish)

is it where everyone in scotland undiscovers the internet, relived ww2, then ww1, then completely forget about electricity. next, they de-invent the steam engine, have this habit for not washing themselves and having their death rate rise from the plague?
or is that de-evolution?

This probably should go into the Bitchlist, but since everybody seems to be using this thread to express their appreciation with/vent their frustration with our country, it's going here.

Went into HMV a few days ago to try and buy the new(ish) Alice In Chains live CD (which I've had on mp3 for a few weeks now - it's damn good, btw) only to find no record shop in the whole of our town bothering to stock it.

If you're after any CD with "garage" or "dance" in the title, you're fine. Try and get hold of an album from one of the pioneering grunge groups, and you're screwed.

On a slightly different note, it seems the only saving grace is that "Bob The Builder" may rescue us from a Christmas #1 from those lyrical masters "Westlife". Pop music sucks. At least we avoided this aforementioned boyband's rumoured cover of the Clash's masterpiece "White Man In Hammersmith Palais".

"Turning rebellion into money" - you bet.

OK, end of rant. Hope everybody has a good Christmas :)

Jack.

Hmm . . . most ponderous!

What's all this about certain members of the talentless brainless ugly Spice Girls being the only good thing to come out of England. C'mon, be serious! Where've you been all these years?
The best (real) modern music in the world comes from Britain, and has done for the past 30 to 40 years. Yeah sure, there's plenty of good music on the full global scale, always has been & always will . . . from N & S America to Europe (historically = no disputing the overall best classical composers were from here <Russia included>, today = truly top underground electronic / techno & dance scene & plenty of hefty ambience & chill out : notably from Germany, Belgium & France) and, though to a lesser extent, also from Africa to Australasia and even Asia, etc. But overall, Britain has consistently produced the best music. Naturally, like all countries, it has it's downside aswell . . . notably the shitty commercial chart music of today's wayward & profit-based industry. You can't judge the general musical output by the national top 40, especially over the past 5 to 10 years, 'cos it's been pretty diabolical (with the odd exception here & there). You've gotta dig much deeper these days 'cos the real music scene has gone well underground.
Britain is still producing the best in proper techno, trance, breakbeat / nu-breakz, drum & bass, indie, crossover, grunge, digital dub, weird & freaky experimental vibes, ambient & chill out, trip hop, new age, space rock, death metal, etc . . . btw, I'm not into house, garage (some of the new breakz orientated stuff with the hefty monster sub bass lines ain't too bad tho'), or soul/RnB & rap whatsoever.
And, there's no disputing that we've produced some of the best and/or most successful artists from over the years, whether you or I are into them or not, there's been: The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Mike Oldfield, Hawkwind, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Fleetwood Mac, Free, King Crimson, Thin Lizzy, Roxy Music / Brian Eno, T-Rex, Gong, Bowie, Sex Pistols, Stranglers, The Clash, Buzzcocks, Siouxsie & Banshees, The Police, Psychedelic Furs, Motorhead, Killing Joke, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, U2, Simple Minds, Joy Division, The Fall, Clannad, Primal Scream, Stone Roses, The Shamen, Orbital, The Orb, Underworld, KLF, Seal, All About Eve, Bomb The Bass, Massive Attack, Portishead, Ozric Tentacles, TransGlobal Underground, Eat Static, Astralasia, Dub Syndicate, Moby, Banco De Gaia, Fluke, Leftfield, Future Sound Of London, Sabres Of Paradise, to name but a few, and on to some of the even more recent top indie & crossover techno bands . . . the list is endless & could probably take up about 10 pages, so I'd better stop there, especially b4 I start to list some of the even more obscure stuff.
Hey, don't get me wrong, I'm sure we could all make up an (almost) equally impressive American list too. Then again, & especially so these days, a lot of the best music is produced by bands with multicultural personnel from right around the globe, and that I believe is definitely (one of) the way/s forward.
Hey, I should know, I've been a DJ for over 20 years!

Hey, ExtremeCriticizer dude:
Where abouts did you live in Britain for 6 years then?
It sounds like you were in some remote village in Cornwall or something :)
You can get absolutely any type of food over here . . . how can it be crap?
There's American, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Greek, Spanish, Mexican, restaurants, takeaways, supermarkets, drive-ins, coffee shops, the lot . . . and even fish & chips too :D
And what do ya mean by "crap lager"? Is there any lagers that can't be gotten over here, either on draught or import? You can even get Guinness everywhere too!
Finally, there's 5 national terrestial TV channels nowadays, though most people have also got Sky, Cable or OnDigital.

And as for accents . . . well, that's a totally different kettle of fish! :)

Ee by gum, thar nos!

Cockney, "Ooh arr" Devon/Somerset country bumpkin style, la-di-da posh gits, Midlands & Brummy, NE Geordie, NW Scouse/Mancunian, N & S Yorkshire, Scottish, Welsh, Irish . . . and all the many dialectic variations . . . it makes ya wonder how we can get so many different accents into one small island.

Merry Xmas y'all ;)

Like I said, if I was to include everybody, the list would go on forever.
Tho' you're right about Joe Cocker, what a guy!
Not sure about Oasis tho' ?????? Next thing you'll be saying, what about Verve, Blur & Pulp.
Others I definitely missed were Radiohead, Prodigy, Pop Will Eat Itself, Meat Beat Manifesto, Charlatans, hmm . . . not sure about Ride, Supergrass, etc.
There's also : Jesus & Mary Chain, Sisters Of Mercy, The Mission, The Cult, Magazine, Bauhaus, Japan, This Mortal Coil, Loop, Alien Sex Fiend, Rain Parade, New Order, etc . . . and that's just the indie section.
I mean, I could go as far as including: Elgar, Delius, Holst . . . Kate Bush, Camel, Soft Machine, Dr. Didg, Divine Soma Experience, Phil Thornton, Alpha & Omega, Zion Train, David Holmes, Suns Of Arqa, Plastikman, Irresistible Force . . . fuck Norman Cook tho'!

If ya want more, check out my website -> MeggaMusicCharts & Home Listening Chart.
That's where we definitely hit the more obscure sections.

Great. We've got ourselves to blame. Is there such a thing a proper techno etc?. Try some real music, you know real instruments, they sound a lot better. All that electronic and synthesized stuff is so fake, nothing can beat guitars, drums etc.

Probably the best British is Queen and you ain't mentioned them. Those bands / musicians may have been sucessful and influential, with the exception of a few aren't so good. There's no way Oasis should be there piesupreme and I still can't believe how the Stone Roses got in there.

Anyway Britain has produced some great music and bands but America is ahead at the minute. If i picked my fave 20 bands only two at most would be British. Chart music in Britain is not worth listening to, thanks to the greedy record companies who are more concerned about money not music.

Oh yeah, Just got back from Leeds, back home to listen to some great mp3's.

Matt dude:
I think you either missed the point or you need to read my posts here again, mate!
Queen? Shite! Some of their earlier stuff wasn't too bad, but they sold out after Bo'Rhapsody.
You just (mis)quoted a small sentence and ranted on like some half-baked idiot.
I hate it when people do that!
You've obviously not heard too much good British music of late, especially if you judge everything by the appalling state of the charts. The British underground scene has never been livelier & is thriving with "guitars & REAL instruments". The crossover element is the major key factor (combining acoustic with electric, analog with digital, east with west, etc). If only Dream FM (major pirate radio station in Leeds, '92 - '96) was still around, you'd get to hear some of it. I was HeadOfMusic, btw.

I'm also very aware of the fact that there's loads of hefty music comin' from America too.
There's loads of hefty music being made worldwide (I'm sure I already mentioned that above);
But this thread is about the UK, so I kinda felt at home here.
Sorry I even bothered now. I suppose I should go back to giving tech support instead. :(

Obviously, peoples' musical tastes vary on a very large scale. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, regardless of how ignorant they may or may not be.
Also, I didn't say that I liked or listened to everyone in the list.
The Stone Roses first LP is one of the biggest selling records of all time!
They didn't need to make another one for 5 years because of it!

Hey, I'd like to see (eg.) THEMike's list, or any of our other British mods!

So, where did ya go in Leeds then? Except for SubDub, virtually all the clubs are crap, unless I'm playin' :)
Ya should of come round to my place instead & listened to some proper hefty real music. :D

Laterz -> I'm outta here -> Egg.

Matt
23rd December 2000, 02:36
I quoted the right part but nevermind.

If you're going to say stuff like Queen shite then maybe you should stay in tech support. They're probably the best British band ever and i'm not even going to start to say what I think of people who use the word 'sellout'.

No I haven't heard a lot of British music of late. Sort of given up with it. I know there's some good stuff though (out of the charts of course)

I can't explain why the Stone Roses album sold so well. Just one of them unsolved mysteries.

I only went to a crappy club in Leeds but then so are most clubs judging by what they play. So you play some good stuff then, like what? I hope we're talking Metallica etc here.

So ya telling me stuff like Crazy Little Thing Called Love isn't shite & a sellout?

If Queen are the best British band ever then God help the worst! (ie. god help today's chart acts)
Queen 1 + 2, Sheer Heart Attack, A.N.A.T.O, A.D.A.T.R - those LP's had their moments, but after that, yakkkkk, tho' Under Pressure was pretty cool (thanks to Bowie's input).

Anyway, imho, Hawkwind are the best band ever (32 years & still going strong)

Yeah, I possess & play some early Metallica (the first non-British band I've mentioned)
If you want me to mention some other non-British artistes, then I'll see you 10 pages later.
btw, I have one of the largest music collections on the planet, but that's another story.

It would seem that me & you are the only ones who've heard of the mighty Porcupine Tree.
The Sky Moves Sideways is one of THE all-time classic LP's.
I've got the ltd. blue vinyl with poster, promo version . . . wow!

I used to listen to the Ozrics many years ago, b4 Joey & Ed left to form Eat Static.
I much prefer all their older stuff (early 80's to early 90's), but not as keen on their more recent works. They tend to have stagnated a little.
Actually, I've got about 10 cassette tapes of studio sessions from the early to mid 80's full of stuff from b4 they'd even officially released anything. Joey gave me them sometime in the late 80's. I've also DJ'ed along side Eat Static on numerous occasions at many Megadogs and festivals. "Sploosh", however, is still one of my all-time favorite trax & I still play some of the old stuff quite often.

I've also DJ'ed on the same bill at Megadog/Club Dog as the likes of Underworld, Orbital, Chemical Brothers, Banco De Gaia, DreadZone, TGU & many others, but that's another story.

To add to the list of heavily influential British bands:
(* = not ones that I am/were necessarily into) :
The Kinks*, The Jam, Clapton*/Yardbirds/Cream, Alexis Korner Band*, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers*, Manfred Mann*, Spencer Davies Group*, Deep Purple*(+ all the bands that followed after they split up), Wishbone Ash, UFO, Gentle Giant, Roy Harper, 10cc*, Spacemen 3, Duritti Column, Alan Parsons Project, Gordon Giltrap, Colosseum, Brand X, do the Art Of Noise class as British?, Bill Nelson, Camel, 999, The Lurkers, The Ruts, Monachrome Set, The Pop Group, The Slits, Alien Sex Fiend, Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle, Renegade SoundWave, The Specials*, UB40*, Steel Pulse, Adrian Sherwood/On-U Sound Records, Future Sound Of London, Death In Vegas, Roni Size, etc etc etc, tho' I suppose I should've added this to the above list to make one big list.
Maybe I should've added the * in the above list/s aswell, so as to avoid certain people misinterpreting my post/s again, ahem.

A lot of the stuff I listen to & play these days tends to be a lot more obscure, so it's pointless posting a list here if no-one's ever heard of the majority of them (sad)!
More details = available in the MeggaMusic Charts (+ all the archives) & Home Listening charts c/o my website.

Hey, I could make up a pretty impressive American list (starting with Hendrix, Zappa, CSNY, Santana, Talking Heads . . . oh shit, stop me now . . . . quick . . .), plus a damn good rest of the world one too, but I ain't gonna bother here (phew).

Any others I forgot about?
We won't go too heavily into recent tech/electronica/dj side of things, otherwise the list would go on eternally.

2. Scanky slappers who charge you on the beaches(if you know what I mean)
3. wait a year till other countries have got new games(thats why there are so much imports than originals in britain)
4. if you did not have sky all you would have is 4 and a half channels (BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV,CH4, CH5 the half channel....well if your lucky to see anything from that channel)
5. The goverment screw us out of billions a week (greedy bastards)
