I don't know if I should. I didnt think it would make a difference if I just reinstall over the exsisting version. It will replace the files anyway. Everyone else I know uninstalls and then installs... Am I missin somthing?
hit me back...

i dont uninstall, that just screws up my settings, installing right over the top is the way to go

Sure its perfectly fine? More conveniant that way, but might it cause problems?

The only thing is, if you do a uninstall you'll lose all of your plugins/skins if you've not made a backup. I agree with videocrew. It won't cause any problems.

Since WinAmp does NOT make any changes to your System.Reg files or your System.Ini files (as evidenced by the fact that you do NOT need to restart your OS when you install), you therefore do NOT need to un-install, but can safely re-install right over the older version. This is true of ANY program that does NOT prompt you to re-boot your OS on completion of the install. Any prog. that runs immediately after install, like WinAmp - can be re-installed without un-installing.

Do you know the registry very well? Ok, if it doesn't make any changes, go to control panel, add remove programs and see if you can uninstall winamp from there.
I know I can. And do you know where those programs in the lists are gotten from? THE REGISTRY! And do you know what puts the lists in the friggin registry? The program that was was installed. Sheesh. Also, where do you think file association/directory context information is stored? IN THE REGISTRY! And i can tell you, winamp does modify the registry. Just because you install a program that modifies the registry, doesn't mean you have to restart. DUH!, ask any idiot who knows something about the registry. Fuck, I modify the registry heavily whenever I use the computer, and I DO NOT have to restart... only till I want some of the changes to take place do I have to. O yea, the registry is split into the system.dat and user.dat files (as far as I can tell)
O yea, but anywayz. It's a safe bet that you can re-install over older versions. I mean like in one year, It might be better to uninstall an older version (atleast once) because file names might change and then older files might be left over. But you can safely reinstall over winamp.

:D HE HE HE HE HE. I did sound a bit mean didn't I. TOO BAD, no fight.
LOL. I just hate people who so outright(edly) state something that is absolutely not true. Maybe I should make a list of all the keys, strings/binary/dword values winamp places in the registry, but I dont want to do a before and after comparison of the entire registry, so I wont.
Sigh, that felt really good tho. I'm just pissy because it's 2:27am here (EST -5:00) and Starcraft Broodwar (BattleNet) is keeping me up cause its christmas break.

it doesnt seem to add anything to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
except for the stuff under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
and the file association stuff

Ya, thats what I notice immediately. However, if you have the MAD plug-in, something is added in the first key you stated. But thats a plug-in invoked key that has nothing in it anywayz. Nothing of concern anywayz.
It does add something into:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. (Though thats not the only place things go)
Plenty of things are modified/added to that actually.. And it keeps coming back everytime I erase some of it. Actually, It adds a minimum amount of data to the registry. Things like the file association and stuff for the directory context menu are the few obvious things I've found. This quality actually makes WinAmp a better candidate for porting to another OS (It's not super dependant on Windows).
O yea, I wonder about this. Does nullsoft (justin?) have the intellectual rights to winamp technology still? I mean since they were acquired by Aol and all, i was just wondering...

either way the point is that yeah its fine to install over the top of winamp, wouldn't do WA3 over WA2 tho' :)

I wonder how many users of WA2 will install WA3 right away and get rid of WA2. I think that I'll be running both of em side by side until I determine that WA3 is much better (prolly will be almost imediately). I say this in the fact that WA3 is not just another upgrade to WA2, rather, it (I believe) was created separately from WA2. If this is a true statement then that question above implies, otherwise... DOH!?!
